    UMO Hunting Knife?

My thought too Long Walker. It would seem they were making it look like a Upper Missouri Outfit issued to a company man.

Side by side 00 buckshot success

I shoot at my place a lot. Doesn't seem to bother the deer much. I didn't draw a buck license this year but got three doe permits. So you can guess what shows up in my trail cameras and comes in every afternoon? Bucks,,.... one is a 5x5 Whitetail and in his prime, the others run from spikes...

    the black hill of s.dak.

I live north of the Black Hills about fifteen miles. I spend most of my time on our place but have snowshoed and ridden the back roads in the hills on my motorcycle. We live in South Dakota about fifteen miles east of the Wyoming border.

    Maximum Effective Range

I agree with the 25 to 30 yard range for density. I tried the Skychief load for smoothbores that gives better pattern density.

POLL on Smoothbore Deer Hunting Distances

My smoothbore distance limit is 50 yards as beyond that I cannot be sure of a killing shot.

    NW Trade Gun?

You will very likely grow to enjoy shooting a flintlock very much. I got my first NWT rifle about three years ago and have used it turkey hunting and shooting upland game. I read the same Nesbit article you did and liked the short barrel model as well. However for all around use my preference...

    Early Plains Rifle

That is a beautiful rifle. I really like the color of the stock too.

    Canoe Gun?

Back in the 1960's I used to play poker with a medical doctor who worked for the federal government by treating patients on Indian Reservations. He had been doing this work for about twenty years at the time. Most of these reservations were in Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota. He collected...

Rifle in the style of Jacob Dickert

That gets a WOW! Nice rifle, great wood.

    is 80 grains enough

I use 80 gr. of 2F and 1 1/4 oz of shot in my flint trade gun. It patterns very well at 25 to 30 yards with the cylinder bore but falls apart after that. It takes turkey cleanly at 30 yds but is better at 25.

    Excellent work. :hatsoff:

    Ruger Old Army

$400 is a steal. Around here used blue goes for $600 to $700 and New ones (there are a few around) are in the $750 and up range.

    Shotgun wads

I use dry wads as well. Sometimes I will lube one to see if it makes a difference but so far it has not. I started using them dry because the kind that I use swell up a bit will no longer fit down the barrel.

    Spring turkeys

I am using a 62 cal. copy of a trade rifle. Working on loads whenever the weather is okay. I use #5 shot.

Do you use your flintlock for all seasons?

I am fortunate to live in a State where you can use a muzzleloader during rifle season. I frequently do that too, and especially when I don't draw a ML license.

    original colt 1860 army

I passed on a 1860 Army last year at a show. All original, no finish left, grips in poor condition. $1200.00 I have seen others of late as high as $2500 for well used condition, working but not cosmetically perfect. If they are in good cosmetic condition they can get expensive and, of...

    Flintlocks and BP substitutes

As others have said there are no BP substitutes that will work reliably by themselves in a flintlock. In my percussion rifle they work just fine as far as ignition goes. My advice, if you can do it, is to buy a case of one pound cans of black powder and you are set for a time.

    Wick Ellerbe in Muzzleloader Mag.

It is a great article. I really liked seeing a few photos of the things you have made. LRB was a neat stamp on the knives too.

    BP Conversion Chart

Spence 10, thanks for posting that data. I was reading this thread and making a few notes about what I have been shooting in my rifles and that data certainly helps one to understand the various velocity and pressure differences between the two granulation sizes.
