Someone Talk Me Out of a Howdah

I have an antique from a gun show that has no real value... ($65) I was thinking of rebuilding it into a howdah. The muzzle is garbage... bent etc. But if cut down it would be good. Just wanting to be sure I didn't trigger one of those spooky raids over a cut off shotgun if I did.

Someone Talk Me Out of a Howdah

I need to ask a question to be sure I know what I think I know??? Is it because these are muzzle loaders that they are exempt from short barreled or cut off shotgun restrictions? Or.... Is it legal to cut off an antique shotgun?

Another decent Boar down, .54 cal patched roundball

Hey guys.... if any of you all have a good spot for hogs and will let an outsider come hunt them please advise! I have been looking for a place to go hunt them. We don't have them in northern New Mexico! I keep hearing about hunting them, but all I can do about it is drool! I haven't been...

    The Enfield shoots better!

I have some original Enfields .... they all shoot high. So.... I got my wire feed welder out, taped off the area for spatter and added me a little/lot to the front sight, then filed it down to suit. Fixed the issue right up! If you get some of that browning chemical, it won't even show as non...

    Maxi Balls Accuracy and tips?

Did you have shallow or deep rifling? I am wondering about the rifling that has a bunch of thin rifling rather than the normal thick grooves. I don't know what they call that thin type... but I have one with it.

    Maxi Balls Accuracy and tips?

Hi I was curious about using Maxi Balls.... Anyone have any tips or thoughts on using them? Best lubes, loads? How accurate are they? 50 cal. Thanks Jerry

    Minnie ball accuracy?

so is the 3f safe in an older gun? I am assuming its internal pressures would be higher. Whether under a minie or a prb? Out towards the muzzle it wouldn't matter much, but up there by your eyeball, that might be important. As noted, I have a couple of 1800's rifles. Both a 58 springfield, and...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

I found a 58 Real here locally.... thanks for the advice! I am also wondering if there is a mold that is a counterpart to " "Hornady Pennsylvania Conical Muzzleloading Bullets 50 Caliber (512 Diameter) 240 Grain Box of 50" ...... It looks like these are a modified copy of a minnie but maybe...

    Too Much Powder ?

I get confused over the load and caliber... My understanding was 3f up to 45 cal but 2f over 45ca. You are talking 80 gr of 3f for 54. I generally have loaded out 65 gr of 2f for all of them. Am I missing something here? I have both 50 cal thompsons and 58 cal antiques (Springfield and...

    Too Much Powder ?

I would carry a pistol also if your going after bear. They shot single shots way back when but I'd like to have a follow up! I tend to think that why they seem to picture pirates with pistols tucked in everywhere! Hunters can become the hunted rather easily once they are out of ammo!

    Minnie ball accuracy?

You are noting the service load as 60 grains? I had read somewhere that it was 65... Do you happen to know which it would have been?

    Penny Knife for Patches?

Well .... I bought an original patch knife that was a part of the Nepal cache. They dated it to Napoleonic times. Possibly revolution, but more likely 1812 stuff. It was used and issued militarily for use with brown bess. I likely ruined its historic value when I sharpened it.... but it is...

Is there a corresponding mold for these? I like to cast my blackpowder bullits.

    Minnie ball accuracy?

Doesn't a patch interfere with the minie's ability to expand out to fit the bore?
  18. Y

    Minnie ball accuracy?

This is a good description of where I'm at with the minies.... It doesn't tumble, fly off into space or anything, just way too big a circle for my liking. If I back off the the load to 55gr as advised above, will I have any humane issues for shooting things? Generally deer but possibly elk in...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

Oh... twist rates. That standard thompson 1:48 for most of them. I also have 1:60 in one of them. It doesn't seem to matter much with them though. I had read somewhere that the field load for the civil war was 65 grains of FF so I have copied that. Figured that was about the most field tested...

    Minnie ball accuracy?

Ok... my normal load for them is 65 gr FF in triple 7. I have been shooting from 50 and 54 cal thompsons, and occasionally investarms. I bought them originally to use in firelapping (I posted such in another thread). But... most of the civil war was fought with them and I keep trying to make...
