    Strap?

I’ve used either leather or braided cord for mine. Nothing super fancy.

Surefire way to drill a horn spout?

I’m not super experienced, but I’ve done 4 horns and haven’t gone through the side on one yet. Biggest thing is to pay careful attention to the curve and line up the bit so it will stay inside the horn. A vise helps. I use a hand drill. Make sure you pull out and clean the bit often; they don’t...

Ramrod ends - Steel or Wood?

Mine are all brass with a cupped end and 10-32 thread. I bought a solid steel cleaning/range rod so the threads aren’t totally necessary on my ramrod, but it’s still nice to be able to swab in the field if I need to.

    T/C 1000+ Replacement?

Tallow is animal fat. It’ll probably work fine. Mutton tallow is used in a lot of patch lube recipes.

What is your main use for your muzzle loaders?

    95% hunting, 5% target shooting.

    Cleaning modern pewter

I'll second the Barkeeper's friend. Works great on every metal article I've tried it on.

    Are you under 40?

I'm 36. I've been shooting a flintlock for 8-10 years. I've always been interested in pre-Revolutionary history. I'm not a reenactor, and not really interested in it (as a participant at least, I like to watch), but I like to make and use period correct equipment to hunt with.

54 caliber renegade - hard to load

Is it tight on the first shot after cleaning, or only after several shots have been fired? My CVA gets tough to load after I shoot 4-5 times, but its fine before that. If I run a couple of alcohol-soaked patches down the bore every so often the problem doesn't occur. If it's hard to load even...

Do you use your flintlock for all seasons?

I'll be the lone dissenter and say, no, not usually. I mostly use a bolt action centerfire during rifle season. The fact is, I usually only get to go out 1-2 days during rifle season because its the busiest time of the year at work for me, so I go the easy route just to fill the freezer.

    Knife too big ?

I occasionally carry a 7" butcher that I rehandled with a piece of deer antler. To be honest, most of the time I use a folding pocket knife with a ~3" blade for field dressing and most other tasks. My big knife rarely gets used in the field, although it's much better for skinning and...

    how to flatten a horn?

I have set my oven at 350 degrees and put a Pyrodex bowl of oil in there for about half an hour, then pull the bowl out and dunk the horn in to soften it. It works, but it's slower than a fryer because you have to keep reheating the oil.

    kiln

It will certainly get plenty hot enough to do heat treating on steel. Some pottery gets fired in excess of 2000 degrees F. Does it have a temperature controller on it or is it just an on/off type of affair?

    How do Y'all Clean "Em?

I've tried a few store bought cleaning products, but there's no miracle product out there. Here's what I do: To clean the lock, I remove it from the gun and wipe it off with a wet rag. Then wipe off the water with a dry cloth and let it air dry while I clean the barrel. I use warm tapwater...

    54 vs 50...any real advantage?

If you're dead set on using heavy conicals, there's no advantage in picking a .54 over a .50, or even a .45 (which is what I'd probably pick if I was exclusively shooting conicals). Where the .54 really shines is with patched round balls, because it shoots bigger, heavier ball. The other...

Newbie Needs Help With A hunting Load

That load will work fine for deer. You might want to try a few different loads between 60 and 80 grains to see if you get better accuracy, but you'll be OK with what you're shooting now.

    Bending horn

If you can find yourself a small electric deep fryer, they work great for this operation. The temperature is controllable, and since the fryer is portable, you can do it outside or in the garage so you don't stink up your house (heated horn is a bit smelly).

    Knife sharpening

I use 2 stones. One is a medium grit Smith's stone and the other is a hard Arkansas stone. Then I finish on a leather strop. I can get a knife shaving sharp in 5-10 minutes if it isn't super dull to begin with. I honestly don't know if I could do any better with one of the various sharpening...

    deer hunting with dogs?

Nope. Allowing your dog to run big game is against the law here. Not sure I'd go for deer, but it'd be nice to be allowed to run bears with hounds.
