    Friends unidentified gun

Trying to help out a friend. He has this percussion smoothy and it has no marking other than what looks like a 10 in a bunch of places. My guess is its a repro from the 50-70s but figured I'd ask the experts. I'm just trying to figure out what he has and if it's (assuming everything else is...

    OOPSIii ! what's your best/worst one.

Guy at camp flashed on two deer. After that he tried and tried and couldn't get his gun to go off. Everyone looked at it, everyone tried somethingdifferent. Powder, lighter, matches. After about an hour someone ran a ramrod down the barrel, he never loaded the gun.

    Weighing Swaged Round Balls

You're on to something! Include a ballistic coefficient and they'll fly off on the shelves.

    Weighing Swaged Round Balls

...you're entitled to your opinion, as am I. I don't think it's a waste of time and I enjoy it. I enjoy it even more when I reduce as many variables that don't involve human errors.

    Weighing Swaged Round Balls

I was really into accuracy a few years back. I bought Dutch's system, all the tools, patches, etc. I found that the patch thickness made the biggest difference, everything else helped to improve a bit. I weighed balls but also measured them with a caliper. Most of the time with cast balls if...

Petrolum products and black powder fouling....a chemical analysis.

Regular oil, chemically modified. I assume that "synthetic " is more marketing than anything

Which state is the best for ML?

I can't complain about Pennsylvania, an early, 7 day antlerless season. 14 day firearms and a 3 week flintlock season across the state. If you live in certain areas there are extended seasons. Plus lots of public land available. Public can get busy in the special regs areas, however the more...

    T/C Hawkin HELP!

I had a similar issue with my Hawken. Lower your rear sight all the way. If the factory rear sight sits lower you may need to swap it out. I had to file my rear sight to lower it even more. At 50 yds its still 2 inches high. This is all assuming you have the correct sight alignment

    Graf's powder

Used it up years ago, only have Goex to compare but elephant was very dirty and seemed a lot less powerful

    Priming The Pan

Ha! Watched a guy several years back use straight pyrodex. The hang fire was incredible! Had electronic earmuffs and could hear it for several seconds before I looked up. Guy did a great job of just holding steady as it popped and fizzed. There was smoke shooting out of the touch hole, too! If...

    Graf's powder

Just bought a bunch myself. Never used anything but Goex and Elephant. How does Graf compare? It might be a year or two until I get to using it.

Anyone using the Hornady 240gr conical?

Not posting this to brag, but to show that round balls can be pretty accurate. This was at 100yds with a patched round ball. This wasn't even my best load combination. Someone left a brand new 24" target at the 100yard range and I said "why not". The bullseye is 3"

Anyone using the Hornady 240gr conical?

Can't go wrong giving them a shot! I wouldn't hesitate using them hunting, I just like the accuracy I've gotten with prb's now that I have a great load. If you like to tinker then playing with patch thicknesses can be fun. Now that I said that out loud, I think someone on here does the same...

Anyone using the Hornady 240gr conical?

Agree, I've tried them. They were not as accurate as my roundball load. That said,, they were getting 2-3 inch groups at 50yds (bench rest) They'll definitely be flatter than the heavier conical.

What's the difference in an aluminum rb mold and a steel mold.

When you say gauling, are you talking about the hole in the top of the aluminum mold? If so, mine did the same thing. It opened up the top of the round all mold. Aluminum is way too thin up top for a soft metal. I don't think any lube would have helped since it would directly effect the pour...

Dug out the Traditions Trapper pistol today.

I bought the same gun a few years back. On mine I had to have them replace the frizzen right from the start. Traditions was very responsive and sent a new one out right away. Now it throws good spark and is reliable. I also had to shoot it a bunch to soften the sharp edges on the lands...
