Problem with ignition on my new Hawken

Some pictures of your new rifle would be nice. Like Nitwit says, lots of spit is good. At matches anyway it's all I use. You should be able to get off a lot of shots with it. I use a damp patch, not wet, between relays to swab the bore since at 10 or 15% humidity the fouling gets hard fast.

Study: Hunters Die After Consuming CWD-Infected Venison

It might have occurred. I'll wait and see before I get too worried.

    Wobbeling Hammer

A common way of tightening up something like a hammer or a loose forend on a shotgun is to move some metal by peening. Using a flat punch you can peen the square hole in the hammer enough to tighten it up. This video is about shotguns but the method is the same and I have done it myself.

    Reinforcing the wrist

Unless it's cross grained and really weak I'd leave it until it breaks, if it ever does. If the grain runs good it is probably fine.

    Flints

The humps can be ground off with a greenstone. Maybe not hysterically correct but it fixes about half the flints we get these days.

    Getting too many misfires

You read it right. The barrel and breach are dry when I load it then I run a lightly oiled patch in the bore. Of course there's a little lube in the bore from the patch. It's a habit I picked up when I hunted in rainy country. It worked for me anyway. Never had a misfire and the bore didn't rust.

    Getting too many misfires

Black powder guns seem to work better with black powder but some folks unfortunately have a hard time getting any so they're stuck with the other stuff. As mentioned, use a fast evaporating solvent like acetone or 100% alcohol fuel to slosh the oil out of the nipple area. I lower the hammer on a...

Cleaning patch stuck at breach end.

That's why I always carry a patch worm and a ball puller. It's funny when it happens to someone else but not so much funny when I do it.

Well done! According to some, you're lucky to be alive!

    Barrel help

It sounds good so far, Definitely worth at least running a tight patch down the barrel to see if it feels smooth. If it does, send it to me. It's what I'm looking for to build a light weight hunting rifle. Or, you can look forward to spending some enjoyable time pondering what to build around it.

    Barrel help

The first question is what shape is the bore in? If that's no good then what you have is what we call a tomato stake. If the bore is good any style half stock would be a good fit with a patent breach. Personally, I would use a back action lock but that's just my preference.

    Help fixing a dumb mistake.

The only people who haven't loaded a dryball are those who haven't shot much.

    browning

The above quotes are all on the spot. (Pun intended) I've used a lot of the same solution with good results. The only thing I can add is to use as little on your applicator as possible. Too much will actually remove some of the previous coats. I put a little solution on the applicator and then...

    Round Ball Tumbling With Graphite

I found out how you get lead dust. You buy some old reclaimed shot from a trap range that has been sitting around in coffee cans for a couple of decades. I had to flush it out with a garden hose for several minutes before it was all cleared up and then spread it out in the sun to dry. #7 1/2 and...

    Round Ball Tumbling With Graphite

Pro Liberace is just another newbie who doesn't know how to behave in polite society. He's easily offended and can only reply with name calling and threatening remarks, as in he threatened to leave the forum. Sort of like the folks who threaten to leave the country but never do. He wouldn't last...

SOLD Thompson Center 54 Caliber Hawken Barrel

This barrel is missing a ramrod pipe and the rear sight. The bore appears to be excellent. Some Bubba put a wrench on it an dinged up some corners as shown in the photos. These can be cleaned up with some draw filing since it needs re-blued anyway. If I were going to keep it I would get rid of...
