    Reboring 15/16ths Round Barrel

Hello All Last year I used Bobby Hoyt to rebore and rebreech an older CVA Mtn Rifle barrel. He did a great job. I have in my possession, a T/C Tree Hawk with a .50 cal. barrel that measures 15/16ths OD. Is there enough metal in the barrel to allow a rebore to anything usable? I do not know...

    Denim Patching

Is denim a popular patch material? I just took my Fiskars scissors and excluding the worn material at the front of an old pair of jeans, made a tremenduous amount of patching from a single pair. I go through a lot of jeans. PD

    Maple Versus Walnut Under Recoil

For a large bore ball rifle utilizing a Hawken Fullstock, is the use of walnut not indicated if the rifle will be shooting heavy loads? PD

    JB Bore Paste

My NOS CVA barrel has a lot of fine machining marks in it. After shooting today and cleaning, I ran three patches with JB Bore Paste back and forth. Then was able to get four more oily patches to come out gray. I don't know if this is metal or fouling but there was a lot of it. It is overkill...

1981 CVA Big Bore .54 Refurbishments

Pardon my redundancy but the pics disappeared from my prior string from 2013. The mention of the CVA Mtn Rifle on the perc page once again got me in the mood to shoot my old gun. I built the CVA Big Bore in 1981. I was living outside of Fairbanks on Chena Dome Rd in a tent. I went to Anders...

    T/C Tree Hawks?

Anybody shot one??? I had one in the 1990's and killed a few deer with it. Sorts of a weatherized White Mtn Carbine. Thoughts? I might get another. PD

    .54 PRB Turkey Load

I want to try loading my .54 CVA Mtn Rifle down to 65 grains 3F for a turkey load. With 80 gr. 3F this rifle rocks severely. Will report back. Anyone else try loading down for turkey? I have a lot of them in the holler and little need for more deer meat. Va. gives us late fall turkey season...

    De/Re-Breeching old CVA Barrel Project

Hello All I recently re-did an old CVA Mtn rifle with a new barrel I was able to obtain. This was to replace an older barrel that had the familiar pitting issues that ate patches and scattered groups. I now have a moderately pitted .54 barrel, 32", 1" flats, with the unrecoverable CVA breech...

    CVA Mountain Rifle Pic Thread

Post up pics and text about your CVA Mountain Rifles here. I'll start. I have two. My first is a 1981 Big Bore (54) that I built from a kit when I lived in a tent in Alaska. Five deer taken. After a 19 year layoff as a wall-hanger, I discovered that the bore was pitted to the point of...

    Leather Capper Pics Please

I want to make one. I used to have one that was a quarter-sized slab of heavy leather with cap holes around the perimeter. On a thong.

Using J-B Paste in NOS CVA Barrel

OK-some months ago I re-barrelled my old .54 CVA Big Bore Mountain rifle. The old barrel had corroded such that patches were fraying and the groups were too big to hunt the rifle. I had spent a few years hunting the rifle dirty, and I had lent it out twice. So it was my fault for not making...

    Pyrodex More Corrosive Than Black?

Everyone I know that jumped on the pyrodex bandwagon in the 1980's now has trashed bores. Is this a cleaning issue or is pyrodex more corrosive than black? PD (your severely twisted appalachian seventh cousin)

Who Is D.M. Davies Rifle Builder?

I have just purchased a nice .62 flintlock Jaeger rifle. I'll get some pics up soon when my new camera arrives. The top of the barrel is inscribed "D. M. Davies". Does anyone know of this builder and where he might hail from?

    Re-Boring CVA Barrels

Has anyone here had an old CVA sidelock barrel de-breeched and rebored? I understand these barrels can be problematic. PD

    LMF Brown Coppering

The copper syndrome seems to happen easily. I had a small spot, now trying to get rid of it by sanding and re-application. Patience is a must.

    Draw Filing Woes

I am trying to draw file my NOS CVA barrel. Even when I load the fine file with chalk it pushes up filings that embed and seriously scar the metal. I'd have been better off sanding and browning. Any advice? I am drawing in a single stroke and not too heavy. PD
