    Murphy's Oil Soap,

I use MOS for cleaning my rifle but I have never used it in or for a lube. The only patch lube I use is straight Vaseline. I have not found anything that works as well as straight Vaseline that lets me shoot a whole match with out having to swab the bore after a couple shots.

    Incredible fouling accumulation

If you really want to use something to moisten the mouth just grind up a couple green persimmons and swish the juice in your mouth to moisten the patches that will keep your saliva flowing to get the patches damp that will pucker up the groups too.

    looking for a knife

Just talked to Bill and told him you said Hi. He said keep your thumb on the dull side of the blade so you don't quench it's thirst again :)

    looking for a knife

I will. I will call him in the morning to see if he has everything loaded on the raft he don't want covered with water from all the sprinkles they been getting down there.

    looking for a knife

Bill is an interesting feller and good friend. I don't think either one of us can draw that string on the eighty pounder any more so we use the Sharps now.

    looking for a knife

If you want a quality blade I would suggest you make a Google search for "Bill Bagwell Bowie knives" He forges his knifes and they are tops. He has done more research and written a bunch on the Bowie fighting knifes. I don't know if he still writes for the Solder of Fortune or not, but if you...

    Extended long range shoot

Nah! can't be two winners. We will make Hermit the grand winner  he stuck it out for the 200 and 100 with some bad weather I gave up at the 100. Butch

    sighting in

Sorry, just trying to help you develop a load that will hold center with the same load at two different ranges. Sa far as your question, how you hold your rifle and length of the barrel as well as the weight of the rifle will have different vertical impacts.

Advice on what gun to buy

A gun is a little to heavy to carry and a 106 or a 155 the recoil might be a little much LOL. But a nice Southern Mountain or a Hawken rifle will always fit in.

    sighting in

Working a center hitting light load at 25 yards can be worked out to hit center at 50 yards working out the muzzle jump of a slower load. You just have to spend time shooting and keeping good records what your rifles barrel length reacts to with light or heavy loads as well as the granulation...

    Rain--Wind--How Did They Fight

Hunting with a flint rifle is as simple as not staying home during bad conditions. You will learn fast what you need to do. A stall over the frizzen is helpful. The flint is no problem just keep the frizzen dry or just wipe your thumb over it before you fire. It will spark if the flint is sharp...

Jethro, Have you posted the results yet for this match or is it still going? Butch

    Remnant embers?

I never had this problem with the ML rifles but I have had a wood splinter smoldering in a black powder cartridge case when I extracted it from the rifle. I put it in the cartridge box neck up and reached for another round and shot it. Putting this empty case in the box the previous case still...

    Russ Hamm Depleted Uranium Frizzen

I might be wrong but isn't lead decayed uranium? does this mean that we don't want to use lead round balls?

Hang fire after swabbing the bore at range

When we had some serious over the log shootin matches here in the past like driving nails through fence boards or splitting balls on the hawks and cutting strings I swabbed the bore. We had plenty time off line to do this. What I did to keep the fouling out of the flash hole was I would push a...

Hang fire after swabbing the bore at range

I would think only a feather brain would try to blow down a barrel with a charge of powder in it. I would doubt that he would even get a puff through the powder anyway. I guess I was brought up during the wrong time but I never needed to carry damp patches or soak them in my mouth except to load...

Hang fire after swabbing the bore at range

I know that I will get a lot of tongue lashing for saying this and this is one reason I don't shoot at matches much anymore. I blow down the barrel after every shot I fire and I never need to wipe my bore so I can seat a tight patched ball. Doing this you are softening the fouling and this also...

    Seeking some guidance

I call it barrel hang time. The slower the velocity the longer the ball is in the barrel the more the muzzle jumps from recoil making the impact higher. I find this to be more pronounced shooting the heavier conical slugs than the lighter round balls. The lighter the charge the higher the...
