    Lead Pot temp

OK, I have a new Lyman Lead thermometer. Up until now, I have been flying blind. So far, I have found that 750-800 and a warmed up mold seems to be a good temp range to heat up the lead to mold. I was surprised that the setting I had it on heated it up to almost 900F. I got the thermometer so...

How are smooth bore barrels made?

I was thinking that the people on this sub section might know how Smooth bore barrels are manufactured. Specifically, a smooth bore. Do they do something like button rifling where they pull or push something through a slightly undersized barrel to make the barrel internal diameter uniform?

    Flintlock Misfires

Took my Dixie Cub .40 cal to range Saturday. Had about 2 misfires where it flashed in the pan but did not ignite the main charge. I only had an hour so split the session with 1/2 hour on the flinter. The first one, I poked the touch hole, charged the pan and went again and it ignited. Second...

So, I have a Dixie Gun works 40 cal flint (cub?) kit that I purchased from a Pawn shop a couple years ago and built up. I did not shoot it much the first year cause I was so busy moving. I'm hoping to shoot it more this spring. It came with a jag that was .335 in diameter. The tip was more...

OK, Not sure if this has been asked before but how might one ignite a failing flintlock? So far I have been lucky that all my misfires, I have been able to deal with by just cocking again and firing. At my range, they call cease fires every 30 minutes. They make everyone wait until any...

Question, when working up a load, how much variation in group size do you notice? For example, lets say, 50 cal patched round ball. With one particular load of about 65 grains, I know the best ball size and patch combo that I can get a tight group with @ 50 yards. Now, If I go back and say...

    Patched Ball accuracy @ 100yds

OK, Im pretty happy with my accuracy from the bench @50 yards, I can get typically about 2" or less group size @50 from the bench. but at 100yards, I was getting 6-8" groups on the same load the first 5 balls. Is this typical? What can tighten this up at 100yards? More experimenting? Do I need...
