Most of the oil came from after shooting; powder burning in pan or smoke coming through flash hole.

What am I doing wrong - Confused Update

Thanks all for the various information on how everyone fires their ball. There is 10 or more methods for me to sort out and test. No having any additional materials to vary my shooting yesterday I went back out to shoot here was my process and results: Freshly cleaned and oiled barrel from night...

    Testing a lock

Interesting test; what type and how much priming powder. Mine does not lift the frizzen when firing; suspect too much spring. I need to do more research on where to file and sand to lessen its power. Or just leave it alone and keep shooting it🤔

What am I doing wrong? Confused

I’ll try the wonder lube on cleaning patch before each shot. I’m still learning and experimenting. Thanks for suggestions. Sounds like crud plugged up vent hole. I’d did get moist black crud in dry patch every time. I also did the twist at bottom. Thanks; will shoot again tomorrow. Cheers!

What am I doing wrong? Confused

So; I’m shooting my flintlock for first time. Shot great first 3 time then wouldn’t fire. after each shot I swabbed with dry patch; using wonder lube with patch before ball. Shooting 3f Goetz powder started with 50 grains. Successfully pulled ball with range rod. Didn’t have a pick liner...

longjnsilver your words are hilarious and too kind. Your rifle is a thing of beauty, no need to get the truck out. really impressed with the patchbox work, wonderful lines and awesome piece of wood. Wish I would have see yours earlier. I’m excited to get mine out and see if it will shoot as...

    Finished Lancaster build

Yes; rust brown everything, followed Bill Raby video from his Lancaster built; took almost 2 weeks of building up the finish. Used an upstairs bathroom with steam from shower for moisture. It’s really durable and very flat finish. Only thing I didn’t do was the frizzen spring.

    Finished Lancaster build

You are partially correct; I’m an engineer; have read several books, learned a lot from YouTube watching Bill Raby, Tim Adlam did my engravings, the rest is mine. It’s not perfect, and I will build something else. Thanks for everyone’s kind words. Excited to shoot it and continue to learn, I’ve...

Just finished my version of Lancaster 50 cal build. Swamped barrel; double trigger; handmade patch box, little carving; silver inlay; rusted the barrel and filed the bolt heads. It’s my first built; I’m ready to burn some powder and make some smoke. Also found time to make a powder horn with my...

What style Muzzleloader do I have?

Greeting all; I’m going through my fathers muzzleloader he bought at Friendship in late 70’s. He cannot find the hardware purchased at same time. Thinks mom sold it at garage sale for $1.50. Ha question I have is what style is his muzzleloader so we can purchase correct hardware? He’s not sure...

    Where to place rear sight?

So I lowered the wood closer to mid level of my swamped barrel. After this I had to reshape the thickness back to 1/16”. Comments... Getting ready to sand out nicks and such in my barrel. Also experimenting with different finishes. Really liked the tannic acid and aqua fortis combination...
