Dragoon pistol butt w/long side straps

I have inletted one of those, and I don't need to do another. (pita) What I know now that I wish I had known then is that the ends of the long protrusions along the sides are often undercut and the top end, and the wood inlet is undercut also. The metal ears poke under the surface of the wood...

Almost done with my Virginia rifle!

The front thimble needs to be back a ways, and the forearm thinned down so the ramrod is easy to grab and pull out. It looks fine.

    Final Barrel Oil Finishes

I usually use RIG, but upon someone's recommendation, on my last few, I heated the barrel and melted beeswax onto it, then polished. So far, no after rust and no corrosion of any kind. It also does not seem to come off easily with handling.

Acid Patina On A Barrel Muzzle

I don't finish the muzzle, because it gets worn off soon enough with the patch knife.

    No.2 finally done

If you click on the photo, there are more photos. Very nice job on the patchbox inlet.

    Beware of inexpensive gun kits

A good friend bought a rifle kit for an inexpensive price several years ago. He tried to build it with my coaching and made considerable progress, but finally gave up. He asked me to finish it fir him. He had disassembled the Siler lock to inlet it piece at a time, as I suggested, but had not...

    Pedersoli Harper Ferry flintlock kit?

I built one many years ago. It put me on the track where I have now built 8 or 10 rifles and pistols, a few from Chambers kits, the rest from parts and wood. The kit is not hc. It is the wrong caliber in the first place, and the lock geometry is odd. The flint hits the frizzen as if the...

    Why don't you contact Beretta?

    unknown 16 gauge.

The stock looks like birch to me. Does the flintlock spark? What condition is the inside of the barrel? It looks like the barrel does have some thickness in the back. I am currently building a smoothbore gun from an original, unused Belgian barrel made for the African trade. It was proofed...

    Another rookie takes the plunge....

I don't like polishing locks. I bet your lock is not a smooth as it looks in its sand blasted original finish. These days I file the plate flat using a fine flat file. all the dips and depressions in the plate that looked so smooth soon become evident. It often takes me 4 hours to do this...

    Rust Bluing carding?

I use Brownells hand brush for carding. I card back to slick metal every time depending on the humidity. Usually 5 or 6 times, once or twice a day. I also card before boiling, but that is just me. If you let the rusting go too long, you will get a rough finish. some folks like that. I...

    Another rookie takes the plunge....

That was a really good move. Despite the long barrel, the gun is light and handles very well. It patterns nicely even with no choke. Here is the one I made from their kit with the precarve in straight grain walnut. I had a difficult time making the forend thin enough. It may still not be as...

How many make there own shot cards?

Theoretically, a 20 gauge is zactly 5/8 inch. Some barrels vary a little from that.

    Traditions Hawken Kit

Skill, care, patience and determination. I tell my wife after working much of the day on a small part; "I did not make much progress, but I did not irredeemably ruin anything." If one continues that for long enough, the result ain't bad. I have no talent, little skill, but lots of patience...

    Overpowder wad and cork

Leave the oil soaked fiber wads out entirely. I load powder, then a thin wool felt wad filled with a mixture of mutton tallow and bees wax, an over powder card wad, shot, over shot thin card wad. No holes in the pattern, no trouble reloading with a tight fitting card wad due to the...

    Tennessee vs Southern Mountain rifle?

When we stop learning, we are dead. (in one sense or another) This hobby is so great because you can never know it all.

    Tennessee vs Southern Mountain rifle?

A southern Mountain rifle and a Tennessee rifle can be the same if you are talking about the Smokey Mountain area rifle. Or, they can be different if you are talking about middle or west Tennessee. I usually call the rifles I like to make Tennessee mountain rifles. As someone mentioned, even...

Dumb question about my TVM kit...

As usual, Zonie is on the money. Do what he says. When you get to the shooting part, take your time and find the load that shoots the best, then adjust the sights by drifting them left or right, and filing (usually the front) carefully and gradually until it shoots on target. TVM usually has...
