    Comments at the range

A guy and I were parked side by side getting ready to head onto some public land that I like to squirrel hunt. I start loading my fowler and he looks at me and lets me know that black powder season (deer) isn't in. I said I know. I'm hunting squirrels. Then he asks what caliber my gun is. I...

Neither rain, nor snow, nor blah blah.

Ha! We got the same email. I tell you...you really have to work to get the reputation that they do.

Neither rain, nor snow, nor blah blah.

I have a set of handgun grips that left Champaign, IL twenty-two days ago and have yet to be scanned into another USPS facility. I'm not sure how long their trucks stay on the road but I'm betting it's not 22 days. So, I filled out the lost parcel form online and sent it to USPS.....they...

how did the long hunters clean there guns,,,,,,,,,,,

My guess is that the lubricated patch of the reloaded round did most of the cleaning. Longhunters shot game for money. Well, for the hides for money. We shot deer today and odds are we are shooting deer tomorrow. How clean would you get your gun? My answer is clean enough.

    Ballistol Warning

I have to say that I've used it in my muzzleloaders for years and have never had this happen either.

Your most 'interesting' muzzleloader transaction ?

About 2 years ago I was visiting a local gun shop. This shop has about 75 muzzleloaders on the wall, most of which are not for sale. I saw a very nice rifle hanging with a tag on the trigger guard. I seriously considered asking to see it but money was a little short at the time and I knew it...

    TRESO ramrod ends

That makes sense to me. I've never used epoxy when building a rod. Not that I knew anything about epoxy not adhering to brass (sounds dubious to me...there are a lot of epoxies out there) but simply because I'm cheap. When the rod inevitably breaks I want to reuse that tip. It's a lot easier...

    Elephant powder, how good?

I shot a lot of Elephant powder back in the day. It was weaker, it was dirtier...but its not like it was cursed. Just shoot it.

Y'all like my new smooth rifle?

Is that a a diagonal bolt in the top of the lock panel? And is it filed to shape with the panel? What does it do? Nice rifle. Great price. Your luck is way better than mine.

Who uses their smoothbore strictly as a shotgun?

Mostly my smooth bore is used for rabbits and squirrels. I like to shoot round balls at the range. However, I have other muzzleloaders that I'd rather deer hunt with.

lets hear your .40 cal loads!

For accuracy I use 50 grains of 3F Goex, a .395 ball and .015 pillow ticking. Lube is olive oil/bees wax. It loads tight, but it shoots straight.

Possible trade value for .40 by C.D. Rinker

I've been in his shop many times while he was building rifles. I've never seen him start a project with anything except a plank. For the most part he used Getz barrels and Siler locks. His rifles (locally) are known for their shooting accuracy. He liked shorter barrels for some reason...

    WD-40 Test

I've been using WD-40 specialist for long term storage based on a test I saw of 30 or so other chemicals. So far I like it. I do know that WD-40 used long term can give a brown patina to firearms. I know it's rust, but I like the look. I have an old matte finished revolver that has taken on...

    Pillow Ticking patches

I have a .25 caliber rifle that requires a .020 patch with a .240 ball. I can load it with a quarter inch ram rod. I have a 54 that likes a .010 patch with a .530 ball. Even that seems a little tight. I guess what I'm saying is, it just depends. If you are getting good accuracy without any...

    Walnut stocks

I put together a Kibler Mountain Rifle kit that is stocked with walnut. The gun came out nice, but I also found out that i"m allergic to walnut wood. After a little Google Fu I found out that it's fairly common.

    Fort Frederick

Good luck on the flints. I was there today and only 2 vendors had any to speak of. I think I may have bought 2 dozen? I normally get mine at the Gun Doctor but he didn't show this year.
