    Flintlock kits

I built a Jim Chambers Mark Silver Colonial Virginia flintlock rifle and it is an excellent kit to work with. The parts are great quality. It does take some work to fit some of the parts, but that is what I think you buy a kit for in the first place, to put your own finishing touch on it. My...

    Speer balls

I have shot mule deer with my 54 GPR. and it worked great. It was a speer 230 grain ball and it broke the front shoulder bone going in and exited behind the opposite shoulder. It ran about 20 yards and fell over dead. If it shoots accurate in your rifle, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

45 cal PRB for mule deer.

I think there is one more reason to go from a 54 to a 45 and that is: I would like to try something new, but still have it be effective. I have killed several large mule deer between 60 and 120 yards. These ranges seem, as recommended by other hunters, to be beyond the limits of the 45...

45 cal PRB for mule deer.

Thank you very much for you great advice. I think I will stay with the 54. It has done well for me over the years. I have also shot a few mule deer with a 45 cal Whitworth rifle and a 475 grain bullet and that worked great as well. Walkingeagle you mentioned using a bullet in the 45 and I...

45 cal PRB for mule deer.

I have read a lot of threads here that show the effectiveness of a 45 cal. PRB on whitetail deer. I have not had any experience with hunting whitetails, but have shot mule deer with a 54 cal. PRB and it has been very effective. I was just wondering what you all thought about using the 45 PRB...

    A second flintlock.

You are absolutely correct about Forsyth being in India. I seemed to have gotten my sources crossed. Thank you for the correction.

    A second flintlock.

When I first bought this rifle I was studying Forsyth's theory about slow twist, large round ball, heavy powder charge. With it's 1:95 twist, it requires a heavy charge to get the ball to spin fast enough for accuracy. It doesn't really start grouping good until about 140grains of Swiss...

    A second flintlock.

I have always believed that knowing your gun well and where it hits at given ranges is the key to bringing down game, large or small, in the quickest possible manner. That is one reason I have hunted for several years with one flintlock. It is a .62 caliber Virginia style rifle with a 42" Rice...

    Flint leather or lead

I have found premade lead from October Country for flintlocks. It's worked real good for me. However, in reading some of the other comments here, it sounds like leather will do just as good.

    Slings for flintlock

Thank you so much for your help. My flintlock is meant for hunting and I do a lot of hiking in the mountains here in Utah. I'm thinking I will build one for those long hikes and take it off, asyou suggested, when I get to my hunting spot. Thanks again.

    Slings for flintlock

Does anyone use a sling on their flintlock? Were there certain styles that were used back in the early 17 and 1800's. I have a Colonial Virginia style flintlock with a 42" barrel. Just looking for suggestions. Thank you.

can powder stay in the barrel?

Thank you so much for the great advice. I will try this info. and it would be nice if I could leave my flinter loaded until the season is over.

Thanks for the advice, that makes a lot of sense.

can powder stay in the barrel?

Hello, I'm sure this question has been asked before, so if it has please forgive me and if you could direct me to this question in some previous post I would really appreciate it. Anyway, I usually fire the load in my rifle at the end of the day when I am hunting and put in a fresh load the...

    2015 Buck

That is an awesome buck. Congratulations. May I ask what caliber and load you were using and distance of the shot. Thank you.

    round ball impact.

Thank you all for your comments and I do apologize for the lack of information in my question. I will try to be more specific in the future. I have shot muzzleloader for many years, and I know what they can do on paper and Mule Deer, but I lack the experience with the bigger animals. My 62...

    round ball impact.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience hunting game larger than Mule Deer (elk, moose, etc.) and if you have noticed if a larger diameter ball has a greater killing effect on these bigger beasts. In other words, using the 54 round ball as a standard, can you tell a difference...

    big game with smoothbore

Has anyone had experience hunting big game such as elk, moose, bison, etc. with a smoothbore and what caliber works best with a round ball for this type of hunting?

    Opinions on Long hammock barrels

I have shot a 10 bore Jeager that the barrel was made from Longhammock several years ago. It was 34" long with a 1:72 twist with 180 grs. of 2f and at 50 yards it put three shots almost in the same hole. Good barrel. I have been able to get a hold of him only once and that was a long time ago...
