Boy I'm Mentoring Earns His Sharpshooter Rocker & Pin!

Dave, I hope he's aware of the fact that the higher on the ladder he gets, the steeper it gets. He seems to be gaining ground very rapidly. He's getting closer to a failed attempt, and that can be devastating for a young lad. You and your group are doing a fine job. Keep up the good work.

    dovetail jig

I bought one from TOW. Can't say that I like it. I ended up just doing it freehand.

Boy I'm Mentoring Earns (3) Rockers In 1st Qualifier!

Dave it's great to hear that he's doing well. Sounds like the lad has a lot of hidden talent.

    wads for cap and ball

Gee, I have a tin of rendered bear fat that's over 3 years old. Hasn't gone rancid yet. I'd be worried about the salt in the bacon grease. Rendered properly, and the salt will be gone.

Anything that turns to carbon can be used, old motor oil, dry wood stick, dry sawdust etc.....

    Drillbit for knife handle

How fast were you running the drill bit? For harder materials, you need to run slower, and constant cooling.

    BP-Indoor shooting?

I shoot BP at an indoor range all the time. The concrete floor is dust-mopped after every use, so unburned powder doesn't build up. I have seen the powder left in the stress-cuts burn, but it was like a fuse running along the floor, not a flash. We don't have a lot of BP shooters at our club, so...

    .32 Cherokee Range Report

Yesterday I took my un-fired Cherokee out for it’s second range session. After the first, I wasn’t happy with it’s performance. It shot patterns, not groups. Patches were completely shredded on some, others, perfect. After cleaning it, I gave it a mild run-through with 0000 steel wool. Well...

Help with Buying a Traditional Percussion Rifle

All you Lyman promoters are right, they are a good gun, but you're forgetting that he said he wants to be able to shoot both balls and conicals. This is where the TC guns would be better, or as was mentioned, the Lyman Trade Rifle I think it was, that has the 1 in 48 twist.

Help with Buying a Traditional Percussion Rifle

I'm thinking any of the TC would be you're best choice. They have the 1 in 48 twist, which will shoot both balls and conicals, plus, they can be had in left hand models. I have a Lyman and love it, but their twist rates are more dedicated to one or the other.

    Pocket Remington-1863

I bought a brass framed one from Cabelas a few years ago for my Missus. It shot very high, like over a foot @ 50'. The chambers were way smaller than the groove diameter, so I got a reamer and opened them up. Now it uses one of the buckshot sizes, 00 maybe (.327")Yes it helped with the grouping...

    obtaining lead

There was a time when battery lead might have been usable, but modern battery lead contains other ingredients like cadmium among others that is from what I understand to be very nasty stuff. I'd recommend not trying to recover it.

    Lewis and Clark Journals?

Project Gutenberg is the only one I know of.

    Lyman Great Plains

Has the gun been completely cleaned/detailed and lubed? The packing preservative can gum things up pretty good. Also, was the barrel scrubbed clean? The stuff they use can be really stubborn to get rid of.

    Pyrodex...will somebody please explain?

No you didn't. You can't walk into Bass Pro or wherever and buy a pound of Goex for $13.99 or whatever price you quoted.

    Pyrodex...will somebody please explain?

One thing that I don't think has been mentioned is that nobody is listing a price for the subs by the case. They quote Goex by the case, and a sub by single pound from the store. Apples and oranges.

    shots all over!!!

I use 25gr of 777 in my ROA 45 revolver, so your 18gr isn't too high in my opinion.

    shots all over!!!

Many shooters have a tendency to snatch the shot as they pass by the intended point of aim. The resulting jerk on the trigger just throws your shot off. As has been mentioned, gentle increase of trigger pressure causing the gun to fire expectantly will give you a better shot. We all wobble...
