    Single vs Double Triggers?

I have a custom early Virginia rifle being built in 54cal. I chose to go with a single trigger. The gun will be used for club matches and plinking. I just like the way it looks and I don't see where I will be loosing anything in accuracy.

    Don Stith 1792 contrect rifle

I was looking at those before I ordered a custom gun. I may put in a order for one. The 49cal is very interesting.

    Swamped vs Tapered Barrels

Im having a Tennessee gun built in 40 cal and going with a very light taper. It will be 15/16 to 7/8 over 40.5" so it will not be that noticeable. The rear sight will smidgen shorter and the front just a bit taller. Some guns are just not right with a swamped barrel. The original gun had a 1"...

    .36 vs .40 cal rifle?

I have owned a couple of 32s and have a custom 40 or order. I will buy another 32. I don't think it really matters what cal you buy. Keep in mind the small the hole the heavier the barrel (if same OD). Just get one and have fun.

    How consistent are you.

I cant use the right words on this fourm to describe my smoothbore groups!

    .40 caliber, which contour?

Barrel has been ordered. It is a 40.5" straight taper 15/16 to 7/8 with a 1/57 twist. I chose to start with a 15/16 for a good ram rod clearance. The rifle will come out a little heavy but it is a target rifle so it does not matter. Charles Burton recommended going with a taper barrel for...

    choosing a longrifle

If you want a 32 I would suggest you get one. They are great fun. You did not mention hunting in your post. The 32 may be a little limited in range but I usually end up shooting off had at 50yds or less anyway. The 32 will shoot at 100 very well on a calm day. Some people love the small bore...

    Ordered a rifle today.

I don't like to see someone's reputation tarnished without a shred of proof. I don't know Mike Lange but have a friend that he is building a gun for right now. The fact that the OP cannot produce a pic and wants to cut the gun into pieces makes no sense. If the OP is infact this broke he...

    Shooting without wiping

I shot without wiping. I use a sloppy wet patch. I sure there is some loss in accuracy and velocity from getting the powder damp. I shoot a lot of woods walks and have gone to the same method for all my shooting to help improve my woods walk scores. Key is a sloppy wet patch and liquid lube. I...

    Does HC really matter?

    YES !!!!

What 40 cal TWIST are you shooting

Im sure that with the right load worked up any reasonable twist would be very accurate. I just would like to be able to shoot our woods walk (all falling steel targets) and I think the extra powder charge that the slower twist will allow should help. I cant wait to get this gun!

After reading this thread I have decided to sell my Hawken rifle.

    Hawken, not Hawkin, not Hawkins

The august group of shooters I shoot with do not care if I call my gun a Hawken or Hawkin. They just have no love or it. If they hear a word like Lancaster then they really perk up. Just depends on the crowd you are in. They accept my North West trade gun but only because its flint. I still...

For offhand shooting to you prefer single or double trigger

I was at the builders shop and he let me try a single trigger on a gun he had built and it was great. I decided to go with the single.

What 40 cal TWIST are you shooting

Its not a pass/fail situation. Im having a $2500 custom gun built and I want it to be right. Keep in mind that the 1/57 is 18% slower than the 1/48.

For offhand shooting to you prefer single or double trigger

The gun Roy is building is based closely off a original Tenn style. It is not a option for the gun to look right it needs a set trigger. Roy builds the Best Tenn style guns I have seen. I am trying to decided about a gun that is being built by a local gun.

What 40 cal TWIST are you shooting

Thanks for the info. Charles Burton is building the barrels and his recommendation was for the 1/57" twist. Im glad to hear others agree with this. Now if I can just get the barrel contour nailed down! :cursing:
