    Windy McClung

The first man to encourage me in muzzleloading 44 years ago, Fuller G. "Windy" McClung passed away on December 16th 2016. He was a veteran of WWII, a machine gunner in the 325th Glider Infantry Regt. of the 82nd AB Div. and a disabled coal miner. He was a premier gun builder, inventor and good...

    Best minne for an 1841?

The original M1841 was rifled with deep grooves for round ball. Most were recut to .58 with three shallow grooves after the Minie was adopted. I suppose you could use a .54 Minie in the original configuration, but doubt it would seal as well. As for accuracy and popularity, they shot great...

Help ID a peculiar mule ear rifle

Probably uses a .22 blank cartridge of some type or something similar.

    1853 Harpers Ferry Help

Well, it won't be a total washout after all. I hope it works out for you both. I've been in that position, coming up short trying to buy an old gun or trading for one. It's frustrating.

You measured right. The barrel starts at the line where the breechplug joins the barrel.

    1853 Harpers Ferry Help

[/url] Thanks! I'll be able to paste it on my other computer. I may have already burned it to disc with some of my other ordnance notes. I didn't see the initials on this gun listed anyway.

    1853 Harpers Ferry Help

Original 7 groove round ball rifling. Can't explain steel tip ramrod except it may just be an early replacement. WW over P stamp may be barrel prover though not common on later rifles and muskets. I've seen an example with AW over P on the barrel. These stamps may have been used by members of...

    1853 Harpers Ferry Help

The proofmarks you saw were V (Viewed) and P (Proved) and an Eagle head though that particular style doesn't look much like one like the later ones.

    Help ID'g a musket??

I can tell you for certain that there were no forager's shotguns ever made by any US armory, either government or private. Any alterations were done post War by private contractors and gunsmiths and whoever thought they could do it. There was no "Foraging Model", ever.

    Don Singer

I just got word that Don Singer, compadre of Don Getz and host of the Pennsylvania State Chunk Gun Championship has just passed away from brain cancer. Another great fellow is gone.

1863 Tower Enfield Percussion 2 Band Short Musket?

The lack of the Broad Arrow and VR makes it very likely to be an import to one of the combatants of the WBTS. The addition of the Anchor JS Mark on the small of the stock at the end of the guard bow plate would point to the Confederate side if it's there. Definitely a cut back P53/3 rifle-musket.

    Wayne Jenkins

He didn't get to shoot the Bill Large match at the JJJJ a few weeks ago due to cataract surgery and I had to miss Roundbottom last week so it's been a couple of months since I've seen him. He messaged me Tuesday and that was it. The news really shocked me. He will surely be missed around here...

    Funky Powder

BP won't get funky but will clump up. I opened a keg of 45 year old DuPont powder to re-package it and I had to break it up with a pointy wooden stick into smaller chunks which I then broke up further with my hands. I've also seen it clump in horns. Back in the day, they periodically had to take...

    Old Musket. Need Help.

Agree. No way that's a Birmingham gun. Not even close.

    Big muzzle flash

When I was in reenacting, some gun crews added some flour atop the powder. All it did was increase the smoke, not increase the fireball. I never saw the need. Gets smoky enough with a straight powder charge.

Percussion .50 cal Muzzleloader under $200?

Somebody may have coned the muzzles or it could just be from wear. The main thing to watch for is nicks or burrs. They will ruin your day accuracywise. A coning tool (you can make your own) will generally take care of that. If the damage is too great or too far down, you may have to cut an inch...

Percussion .50 cal Muzzleloader under $200?

The one I found was actually in pretty good shape. Has a poorly repaired crack in the lock region but otherwise not bad. I've test fired it, turned out ok. I'm not impressed by the shallow rifling and definitely think that TC locks are pretty crappy. But, I'll repair the stock some day, clean...

Percussion .50 cal Muzzleloader under $200?

Keep your eyes open for roadside flea markets and yard sales. I picked up a .50 Thompson Center percussion for $25 last Fall.

Purpose of Lube on the conical

You should only put the grease in the grooves. A lot of people over-lube, just as they put too much water or solvent on a cleaning patch. They end up with a lot of gunk and goo in thar that Gets pushed into the breech when they load. Also, the lube for the Minie should be an 8/2 mix of beeswax...
