Historically Incorrect, or (A Story of Thread Counting and Delrin Rods)

I avoid this type of discussion since I will "never" build a rifle myself with a hand forged barrel mounted in a stock that "no power tool" helped shape. I figure that I would have to stretch the definition of HC quite some way unless I totally disregard the method used to make the components...

    Lock for JJ Henry

L&R Late English with the gooseneck would be the closest I have seen in the "ready made" locks on the market today (from the bigger lock makers).

    Build time

All of my builds have been "scratch builds". I start with a "board", a barrel and a box of parts. My first couple of builds were close to 200 hours (construction only - not the finish sanding, stain, oil etc). Now that I kinda/sorta know what I'm doing it takes me 50 to 75 hours to produce an...

    which powder?

Someday I may be a good enough shot to really see the difference in powder brands. I shot many powders when I was younger looking for that "magic combo". Don't shoot anything but 3F Goex now in all my rifles (38 through 50 cal) because it's just easier to buy "one" type. And lets face it, BP is...

Is .45 enough for black bear?

I hunt black bears but usually with bow (incidental during deer season) or modern rifle - 7.08 (incidental during moose). Would I use a 45 - without a second thought since I use a 38 (roundball) for deer if I still have a tag come the black powder season (and have taken down 3 without losing...

Replacement of breach plug and tang

You didn't mention if this is a "factory barrel" (CVA, Traditions etc) or a build. Some of the foreign built rifles have metric or uncommon threads not found on the plugs available from places like Track of the Wolf etc. So depending what you have you might need to have the end of the barrel...

I would be proud of that for a first build - good job

Which oil after browning a barrel?

The theory behind the "used oil" is not because the detergent or any other chemicals is burned off, but instead because it contains "carbon" from combustion. When steel is heated "very hot" and quenched in an oil that contains carbon it will harden the steel. In the method you are discussing...

Anyone Know What These Parts Are?

They look like the mounts for a tubular magazine that would be soldered onto the underside of a round barrel - like you see on many lever action rifles.

    Inside job

I "paint them" with epoxy to prevent cracking, warping, rotting etc. I do work on wooden boats as well so always have a few "gallons" of marine epoxy around. I mix up a small batch and paint the barrel channel (just the bottom three flats), lock inlet, under the tang, under the nosecap before...

    Tiger Striping on Stocks?

Tiger Maple or curly maple is a little more challenging to work with. Because of the way it grows (as Zonie explained) you have harder and softer wood so when you scrape, chisel, sand etc the softer wood gets removed "easier" and you end up with a "wavy line" unless you are very careful.

Is a 40 round ball sufficient for deer hunting?

I don't usually comment on "is it enough" because I tend to believe that if you have to ask you may already be doubting the question and when you have bambi in your sights you can worry about many things but having enough gun/bow/spear should not be one of them. I have successfully taken three...

Black Walnut for Early York Flinter

Here's one more pic - you can't see the grain on the (board) but you can see that I turned the (pattern - in this case a preworked half stock blank) to get the orientation - yes, lots of the wood will get "wasted", but having the grain run as "horizontal as possible" through the wrist is the...

Black Walnut for Early York Flinter

I am currently working on two walnut stocked rifles - a half-stock and full-stock Hawken styled. A word of warning especially if you have only worked with Maple (or not at all). Black Walnut can "blow out" particularly with chisels. It machines beautifully with high speed tools (routers, drill...

I Wanna Build A New Rifle

I'm not sure I totally understand your question. Are you looking for some history/facts to decide what builder or school you might be interested in or looking for sources with examples of the rifles themselves. I have found if you find a builder that interests you, you can typically google...

Building rifles. Lots to learn, and where to start?

Sourcing parts in Canada is not difficult at all but a touch expensive. Track of the Wolf usually has everything you could want, they have online ordering, calculates the shipping to Canada right on the page etc and they have the (customs numbers) down pat so the stuff sails through the border...

    Swivel breech percussion, MB Williams

I have a listing in a gunmakers list of an M.B. William's who worked in Hornellsville, NY. (no other information). The back action lock would suggest that gun was build not much earlier than about 1850.

    Unfinished Hawken kit

The "roller T3" may mean that it's a trigger that was built/reworked by Bob Roller. If that's the case then this was almost certainly not a "kit" but rather a collection of parts bought individually to build according to the plans. Roller triggers (and locks) are sought after - considered to...

    custom barrel makers?

I'll second Oregon Barrel - they will make what you need and do it quickly and reasonably. You can even pick your twist rate, rifling depth etc.
