    Lee,Lyman,or RCBS which mold?

I have a bunch of Lee molds and some customs...but all are aluminum. I am very fond of Lee 6-cavity molds, but the 2-cavity molds leave a lot to be desired.

What is the moisture in the pan?

Yep. In the heat of the summer mine is like black soup after one shot.

1858 throat and barrel size/ reaming questions

Nice video. I regret I didn't see it sooner. When I bought my pistols they were the only two I'd ever looked at up close. I've since had the opportunity to look at many, and have concluded that mine were some absolutely horrific reproductions. That's much of what motivated me to work on...

lee alox for conical bullet lube

Definitely XLOX if you use this any any sort of quantity.

    54 caliber "Great Plains" mould

Not cheap, but I love the quality. I started casting with Lee moulds, and these are light years better. The cost is a bit higher for hollow base designs, as well. I believe that NOE gives a 15% discount to Group Buy participants.

    54 caliber "Great Plains" mould

Yes. Of course I did. Unfortunately, my phone likes to correct words that are not broken.

custom round ball or patch supplier?

In dealing with .002, I would definitely be looking at patch material! But...you could try some combos with .445 balls, also. And my best loads are quite tight!

    54 caliber "Great Plains" mould

Ah...thanks for the heads up! Anyone that wants to find it can easily do so, so I won't worry about the links! Yeah, I love my NOE molds!

    54 caliber "Great Plains" mould

Before I go further...let me say I don't know if this type of post is permissible or not. If not, please accept my apologies. Anyway, I put out some feelers on the NOE forum for a Great Plains 54 cal clone. There's been virtually no interest, but they say the NOE forum isn't terribly popular...

Rodwha....that was me years ago. Did you find the link? Are the pictures still there?

    Self defence carry?

I would definitely go with a chopped down 44. You don't need a loading lever for this application. I use an 1858 for snake control....no issues leaving it loaded all the time, always goes "bang".

    Pyrodex Powder

A suggestion for those looking for BP is to follow Grafs on facebook. They do some "flash" sales, offering no hazmat fee, or very low prices on BP. I think the most I have ever paid (given I bought in quantity) is $17 per lb delivered, and I think I have beat that more often than not. That...

    Pyrodex Powder

I grew up shooting pyro, and as adult did the same. Eventually, I got tired of the orange patches and did some testing. I am sure it's preserved on one forum or another (maybe the 1858 group if not here) but my informal result was that Pyro is FAR more corrosive than BP. T7 was actually leap...

1858 throat and barrel size/ reaming questions

Rodhwa, Sorry. I meant to get back with you on this sooner. I've recently started casting bullets for some cartridge guns and have myself chest-deep in alloys and new moulds. I've played around trying my best to get a good measurement. The best I have to do so is a digital caliber. It's...

    Brass range rod

I use these for bore guides on my home made rods: https://www.homedepot.com/p/SharkBite-1-2-in-Brass-PEX-Barb-x-Female-Copper-Sweat-Adapter-10-Pack-UC600LFA10/206133189

    Loaded

Assuming you're shooting Black Powder, loaded is fine as long as it hasn't been RELOADED. I tend to unload if I hunt in the wet, and not if I don't. As other posters said, leave in the cold or in a case to mitigate condensation. If it stays dry it will still shoot 100+ years from now.

    Patch material

There should be a small section with what they call "utility fabrics" - canvas and etc. In my local store it's separate from the ticking. It can be tough shopping for fabrics blindly since there are so many synthetics that won't work. If you can find a helpful person it'll be very useful to...

    Lubing the patch

Dutch - the C-clamp contraption is what I used before I learned of dry patching. Now all I use is dry patched with ballistol at 7:1.
