What is your favorite Turkey load?

I shoot an original 1865 William Moore 11 bore SXS. My load is the same as V.M. Starr used in his SXS. I use 3 1/4 dram = 89 grains by volume of 2f black powder and three or four over shot cards over the powder. 1 3/8 oz #5 shot and an over shot card to hold everything together. With in 30...

    Ball/Bullet Trap??????

Like 22fowl said. Shoot into the end of an oversize log and when well used split for fire wood and remove lead. Works quite well and is cheep.

    40 gauge

TOTW sells the Ox-Yoke Wonder Wads in .50cal. They are a wool felt wad that come dry or lubricated. They are for revolvers and cartridges so the diameter may be just right for your gun. They are felt so they may squeeze down a little if need be.

    Buffalo Powderhorn

Buffalo horn works and looks good. I made mine in 1980 and it still looks and works great for keeping my powder dry. Never need another horn.

    Would you shoot this?

I shoot a London made William Moore 1865 in 11 bore. 90 grains of black and 1 3/8 oz. #5 shot it takes down pheasants like a sledge hammer. This is the only shotgun I use for hunting now as it is light and balances so well. My friends don't like it when I out shoot them in the field. They...

    Black powder life expectancy?

I also have three cans of Dupont left that I purchased in 1968 for the cap & ball revolver I purchased. It still shoots great.

    Unloading a muzzleloader question

I do the same as silly goose and put a piece of leather on the nipple (after taking the cap off) and lower the hammer on it. Keeps out moisture and makes the gun completely safe.

    Hardened Lead vs Soft Lead

You wouldn't want that ball to hard if you had to put a screw in it to pull it out. A soft lead ball will take a screw a lot easer.

    Wheel Weights?

Dan is correct about the Zinc weights. If you melt your WW at about 650 to just get the lead to melt, the Zinc weights will float to the top and you can pick them off. Zinc melts at 787.15 degrees so it will float on top before it melts. That way you wont contaminate your pot full of lead...

    Hunting from a Climbing Stand

The Kap Kover looks interesting. I just put a piece of leather on the nipple (with no cap)and put the hammer down in it. Safe and keeps out moisture.

    Wheel Weight RB's

Ranch, Maven is correct. Tin and Antimony do not separate in mixture. Melting points for lead is 621.43 degrees F. Tin is 449.47 degrees F. And Antimony is 1167.13 degrees F. If it wasn't a chemical mixture the Antimony would not mix at the temperature to melt lead.

    Minimum caliber for deer.

The state of Washington has a .40 caliber minimum for deer. It has a .45 caliber minimum for any other large game. Elk, Moose etc. You may want to go a little larger should you want to hunt larger game.

    .590 ball source?

Track of the Wolf has .580 and .595 balls. Not exactly .590 but close.

    Lead Melting

pure lead is pure lead. You have to alloy it with tin or antimony or both metals to make it harder. Quenching alloyed lead will make it harder but not pure lead.

Best way to pervent Oxidation of Cast balls

I have never had a problem shooting lead balls with oxidation on them. They are wrapped in the patch. But if you feel the need to store for long periods find some one with a food saver vacuum sealing system. Drop your balls in a plastic bag and suck all the air out and seal. Good for many...

    12" high at 25 yards

You put a T-C sight on a different make rifle. Most peep sights or tang sights have different size bases to match a certain firearm. The T-C sight base you used may be to tall, not allowing you to lower the peep enough. See if you can find a lower one or do like others have said and move the...

    Bucks Still in Velvet?

North East Washington. I just saw two bucks today on the golf course with no velvet and only twenty yards away. Both were six point whitetail and all I had with me was a four iron.

How do I measure patch thickness?

Like everyone else I go to the fabric store and measure cloth until I find three different thickness of cloth in the range I hope will work good. I do a semi crush fit with the calipers for the size I am trying to get. And then plus or minus .001 on either side of this. Buy some sample strips of...
