    Patching / loading technique

Bakeoven Bill. I would say I have to humbly agree with you as my bench shooting is considerably better than my offhand shooting..with the same patch loading technique. Thanks to all who have responded..here. From the posts and folks who provided advise here... it seems like it's really about...

    Patching / loading technique

After competing in my first flintlock competition, I noticed everyone in the competition was using a patching / loading technique that was very different from what I was doing...I must be doing things wrong... EVERYONE I saw was using a pillow ticking or other (denim) like material that they cut...

Need Help with Offhand Shooting Technique

Wow, between the advise provided by Billnpatti, Dan Phariss and Longrifle 1780...and all others who offered advice... I have what I think was an improved effort based on this forums experiences and recommendations... that's the reason this community is very special to me. I did compete this...

Need Help with Offhand Shooting Technique

Thanks Bill, I am trying to compete for the first time in the Indian Summer shoot for the Flint Lock Aggregate relay Fort Osage muzzloader's club in lone jack Missouri. Appreciate all the help...there are a bunch of guys who know a lot more than me.

Need Help with Offhand Shooting Technique

I finally figured out how to be somewhat consistent with my bench rest shooting for my Kentucky flintlock...(i.e.powder load, patch thickness, & ball size at (25, 50 & 75 yards). I am using .490 patched Round ball,.10 patch with 65grains of 2FG Swiss with a 4fg Goex primer. Now the hard part...

    Effective cleaning

I use alcohol swabs to swab the bore between shots to remove the typical surface BP fouling between shots while at the range. This has given me somewhat consistent accuracy results. When I get home to begin my cleaning process, I use Hoppes BP Solvent to loosen the lead fouling then progress...

    Rite of Passage...First Dry Ball!

This is something that really intrigues me about this weapon system...what did the colonials do when they dry-balled under actual battle conditions? My mistake occurred in a controlled / non-stressed environment (i.e. shooting range). I can't imagine what our fore fathers did when it was life...

    Rite of Passage...First Dry Ball!

Heh... To the contrary.... no bragging rights intended..here but having some humility in admitting that even the best of us can make a mistake from time to time is worthy of discussion. I have learned from this forum that you can learn from your mistakes and use this forum as a medium...

    Rite of Passage...First Dry Ball!

What you suggest seems to be very good advise as a first step. That should have been my first thought... I think I made the mistake of driving the ball down to the lower breach trying to get the ball puller to grip and engage the ball without first trying to blow it out with a minimal load...

    Rite of Passage...First Dry Ball!

I am totally embarrassed...but an happy ending :) I experienced my first dry ball today at the range after 3 years of BP shooting! I encouraged my best friend to join me in the Flint lock tradition... he purchased his first flint lock and we went to the range together... Shooting Kentucky...

    Can you Fix bad Flints...?

Thank you Trent... I couldn't agree more. I am just looking for wisdom from the gurus who have done it. Given the size of the flint, and the condition its in...it seems to be a non trivial exercise that I am eager to learn.

    Can you Fix bad Flints...?

One of my flints for my Kentucky Flintlock started mis-firing...consistently (i.e. not sparking). I replaced it with another brand new flint I purchased from TOTW.. and it worked fine as it has a very sharp edge. My question is ... Is there any way to repair a flint that stopped throwing...

    Looking to buy Flintlock Rifle

For whatever it's worth... I just immersed myself in my first Flintlock from my recent tenure with percussion based civil war Italian reproductions.. So, I wanted to follow the KISS principle...So I started with something simple that I could learn from others on this forum... so I purchased the...

You KNOW You're A Traditional Muzzleloader...

I love this topic... it reminds me of the "You might be a redneck if...." comedy series by Jeff Foxworthy. Thanks to all who have taken the time to provide a witty but somewhat realistic response! Sincerely.
