    Russian Colt Navy

The first is a pretty easy tell but the second not so much. A good tell tale sign is that the screws come in from the right side of the frame rather than the left. Spotted these at the Tula Arms Museum

    Matchlock identification

Labeled as Japanese, however I don’t believe it is at all. Closest I’ve seen to this form is the top of this photo from the museum in Tbilisi, Georgia. The matchlock was acquired in Bukhara, modern day Uzbekistan

    17th Century Ottoman Miquelet "Shishane"

Here is a very early iteration of the Ottoman Turkish "Shishane" Miquelet. This form went nearly unchanged from the mid 17th century till the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. Rarely seen, this has a pierced triggerguard, rather than the button trigger without a guard, and a vent pick, a leftover...

    What is this used for?

Hello all, I have been looking for answer to this for sometime and decided to reach out to the general muzzleloading community for some speculation. These are traditional mutli tools used by mountain men of the Caucasus and Cossacks. One of the known uses was that of a screwdriver for their...

17th Century Austrian Flintlock with Ottoman Barrel

After the Ottoman defeat at the Siege of Vienna in 1683, there were many captured weapons. The excellent collection at the Vienna Arsenal museum has many on display. The Turks were well regarded for their guns and especially their barrels, so some barrels were taken and stocked in the Western...

    SXS with only one lock?

I've come across a very peculiar (to me at least) system for SXS utilizing one lock and what appears to be a split frizzen. These gun come from the Caucasus and I'm wondering if this kind of system was used elsewhere? I'm not well versed in SXS or double guns in general, so input is appreciated.

Are there any barrel makers making full round barrels? I can only find octagon or octagon to round

    Screw Loosens, Then Tightens

I'm trying to disassemble this lock for cleaning but this screw is proving difficult. It loosens for half a turn but then tightens with the next half. It seems to do the same when I tighten it. Would appreciate some help and guidance.

    1822 Caucasian Smoothbore Miquelet

This smoothbore from Dagestan (southern Russia) is marked with the barrel maker "Haji Mustafa", dated 1822 (1238 Hijri) on the barrel along with "Masha'ala" (what God has willed) and "Master of Hikri(?) Muhammed Son Ali" on the tang. The barrel was made in Crimea (disputed territory of...

    Muzzleloader Shooting Competition at Church

HERE is a video from the far east province of India, Nagaland, that borders Myanmar (Burma). This majority Christian region has a deep gun culture, they still build and live off the land with smoothbore percussion guns. Wouldn't have much of a problem going to church every sunday if it was like...

    Completely Waterproof Flintlock

At first look, it seems to be one of those dreaded breechloaders, but upon closer look... This 16ga ca.1780 is based on the Nock, Jover, and Green patent from 1775, for a "lock of which is so concealed that there is not the least appearance of it on the outside, nor any spark of fire or smoke...

Ottoman Shoulder Holster/Scabbards for Shishane (Miquelet)

Came across this photo of some Ottomans from Trabzon with peculiar way of carrying their rifles. It appears that the rifles are in shoulder holsters or scabbards on their left arm, but they do not appear to be gripping them in place nor do they appear to be weighing down their clothing, or have...

Caucasian Miquelet "Cossack" Pistol & Locks

Originally posted this in the photos section but thought it would reach a more interested audience here. I spent a few weeks in October hitching around Dagestan & Chechnya. While there, I was perusing the local antique markets looking for some miquelets, kindjal, and shashka. I managed to find...

    Siberian Snaplock

I spent last month hitching through Siberia while the weather was still good. In Gorno-Altaysk I came across this drawing from a Soviet railroad workers journal that was on display, showing and describing what the locals were using to hunt in the region. The Rifle Shoppe sells a kit for one...

    Caucasian Miquelet Pistol & Locks

I’ve been in Dagestan (next door to Chechnya) a few days now perusing the local antique markets looking for some miquelets, kindjal, and shashka. I finally found the honey hole of the town. The pistol itself is a restored piece, only original pieces are the barrel and lock. The lock in the white...
