How much black powder is too much?

Your ball vs conical statement is correct, but you may have misread my post a little. I am only referring to ball loads here. The regulating load for the gun is 273gr of powder under an 85 caliber round ball. I should not have mentioned the conical in my thread to confuse things, I apologize for...

How much black powder is too much?

A while back I got into a debate with a number of forum members on what amounts of powder was too much. At the time we were talking about my 69 caliber pistol and my 70gr charge for bare ball and 65gr charge for patched ball. The common belief was that this was too much powder and most of it was...

Why would I go to the British military forums to ask about a French pistol?

Pedersoli An IX Gendarmerie Pistol Review

Now I'm curious what the velocity is with your load, any chance you can run it over a chronograph? Also, any plans on making a paper cartridge for it?

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

@Smokey Plainsman very cool, love these big French pistols! I like that multi-tool, mind sharing where you got it? Patched balls are good for accuracy but you should develop a cartridge for the gun like they would have used originally. Cartridges are great fun and they help less patient...

What kind of stuff do you all read?

Haven't done much reading in a few years but I do listen to audio books sometimes. Lately it's been sci-fi books but I'm partial to old war novels as well.

That is a good price! I thought about picking one of these up... I certainly would if I found one for $525!

agreed, but you won't find a similar gun anywhere near that price. The Rifle Shoppe has kits that are around $700 but then you need to build them.

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

    1. Bought the gun early this year. 2. Dixie Gun Works (FH0890 Pedersoli French "AN IX" Military Pistol) 3. Yes, it is very reliable and surprisingly gentle on flints. 4. Yes, I would buy it again. The gun does have some issues, mostly with its inletting. Aside from "not great" inletting, it has...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Did some load development with my An IX pistol today. Decided I wanted a patched ball load to go with my paper cartridge load. Ended up liking a 65gr load of Goex Fg, 15G nitro card, 0.01" oiled patch, and a .676" ball. At 11 yards the gun throws a patched ball 4" left of point of aim (my aim...

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

Did some playing around with a patched ball combo today. I used 65gr of Goex Fg, a 15g nitro card, a 0.01" oiled patch, and a .676" ball. Velocity was 580fps and accuracy was quite good except the POI was about 4" to the left at 11 yards. I had started with a 60gr load but accuracy wasn't any...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Did some more goofen around with my An IX pistol, much of it was racing around on an ATV pretending to be French cavalry :horseback:. Funniest part was when some people came to look at a house for sale on our road and they got see a bearded hill billy ride past at 30mph waving a flintlock pistol...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Not sure what the British would have loaded it with ;), but the French used 116gr cartridges according to another forum member here. I haven't found a proper official source and would love one if someone could point me in the right direction. 40gr of powder would be a "mouse load" for this gun...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Not a hot load, this big girl is a 69 caliber smooth bore using an unpatched .65" ball. Muzzle velocity is only around 500fps with 70gr of powder. The .65" ball weighs 400gr while a .490" ball weighs around 175gr, it takes a lot more powder to get the big ball moving. I've tested it up to 90gr...

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

I've been pretty happy with a 65-70gr load of Goex Fg under a bare ball with this pistol. I heard somewhere that the expected service velocity for these pistols was around 600fps. But I found my gun seems to like around 500fps which is fine by me. I will have to test is on some gel at some point.

    Pedersoli An IX chronograph fun

I found a couple of the ricochets in the yard... not far from where I was standing when I shot them ! Not sure how badly it would hurt to get hit by a 400gr ricochet, but I'd rather not find out!
