Would liek to get a M1816 smoothbore, but...

....as Larry Potterfield says "Only accurate rifles are interesting." (to me) The historical aspect MIGHT be enuf to justify the purchase, but still, I like to at least be able to hit a 8" paperplate at 100 yards. Is there anything people are doing with smoothbore muzzleloaders to make them...

Getting my flint pistol to spark

Built up a Deer Creek flint pistol. Turned out pretty, but its a real weak sparker. At first the frizzen was too still, so I tweaked the spring. Now the frizzen will open all the way, but I get little / no spark. What are all the best tips / tricks to getting this to be a good sparker? Flint...

    Improving CVA trigger

Yeah, I know, you can't polish a turd, but... Any ideas on how to improve a CVA flinter trigger? It has a sear adjustment screw, which I've tweaked, but the trigger is still like a 20lb pull. Any help appreciated.

...and other flintlock ignition issues. (I did search the "Tips" thread, but there ALOT of stuff in there...figgered it would be easier to ask a direct Q ) Being new to flints, I was hoping some could help me set up the flint position, type of flint, best powder, amount / orientation of...

    What finish on maple....

...to get it to look like walnut? Yeah, yeah, I know... I'm looking to finish a maple stock with an appropriate shade (whatever that might be) and then coat with boiled linseed oil, all to replicate the typical USGI stocks of the mid-1800's forward. Any suggestions? I'm using Minwax...

What have I got here? (pic)

Trying to figger out what the top flintlock rifle is... The only markings are "SPAIN" and a serial number and "Black Powder Only" above "JUKAR." It was given to me by my father-in-law. A .451 ball is way too large, so I'm not really sure of the caliber. I'm thinking maybe .40 ?? Any...

    Click....hissss....bang! CVA flint pistol video

Well, dad and I got to shoot his CVA for teh first time - which he built prolly 20 years ago. Used Pyrodex P 3F as flash powder. it failed to fire more than it fires, but we were able to get about 8 rounds off in about an hour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI5--adVElA I guess there's a...

    Re-bluing Pietta

I had to open up the rear sight on my 1858 Pietta Sheriff's Model. Using a triangular file, I opened up the V-notch. Now I gotta re-blue it. I pickep up some Birchwood Casey PermaBlue paste gun blue. After four treatments, the metal seems only a slight tinge darker than bare metal. What am I...

Drop in bore light for rifle

TO get a good inspection of a muzzleloading rifle, I wanted a drop in bore light. Reviews of everything out there, indicated the things sold had too yellow a light, and I really wanted a white light. SO initially, I got one of these.... its a Streamlight Nano. Its less than 0.50" so it'll...

    Shooting history

Got to shoot my M1862 Springfield for the first time. 50gr Goex pushing a 0.577 530gr Minie. Man, I swear, I have not gotten such a rush shooting a gun in a LONG time (including ALOT of full auto / other serious hardware.) At 25 yards, the holes were touching - which still means I'm a lousy...

1858 New Army revolver - legit combat arm?

Do you think the 1858 New Army was a legit combat arm of its day? Certainly, you could pack multiple cylinders. There's NO WAY you could re-powder / cap an empty cylinder. Far too fine a motor skill for combat. The thing that makes me doubt them as a legit combat arm is the way the caps...

Sources for musket caps and Minie balls?

Time to think about feeding the 1862 Springfield. Looking for Minie balls (hopefully a sampler pack, to see what shoots best) and also musket caps - the kind without the wings. I've been told those work better than the ones with wings. thx

    "Case hardening"

I got a nipple wrench / screwdriver tool that has a fairly soft / malleable driver tip. Can it be hardened by heating (red hot) and then dunked in water / oil? Does oil work better? Any ideas apprecaited. Thanx.
