    Sorting birdshot?

The white lead oxide can be removed by soaking the shot in vinegar. The lead oxide will change to lead acetate, which is water soluble. Rinse the shot a few times with water and dry it. You don't want any lead compounds on your shot if you're hunting - just elemental lead.

    Revolver chain fires

Samuel Colt believed that chain fires could occur from either front or rear of the cylinder. He therefore devised and documented solutions for both. He says so on pages 9 and 10 of the following document: "On the application of machinery to the manufacture of rotating chambered-breech fire-arms...

I saw this a few days ago and want to buy it. Could you please PM or email me, Cutfingers, esp. about payment (IIRC to PayPal)?

    SOLD .60 cal Trade Rifle

Is it indeed a rifle or is it a smoothbore? In any case what is the condition of the bore?

    Navy Arms Bess question

Rather than titling your thread "Just a question" it would be better to title it so as to reveal the contents, e.g., "Did Navy arms ever offer a brown bess in 69 cal? ". There are at least three reasons to do that: 1) the user immediately knows something about the thread's contents, 2) the...

    Col. LeMat’s Grapeshot Revolvers?

So Assuming your "'lil percussion revolver book" is correct, perhaps someone here can convert "an inch in soft pine" into "inches of human flesh" for us? Seems it might not be so effective on the ribcage but would be fatal in the gut. But I await an expert opinion.

    Muzzle Filing

I am unclear about what should be filed: Does one file a) the inside of the bottom half of the bore (thus slightly thinning the barrel wall near the muzzle) or b) the edge of the bottom half of the bore (thereby slightly shortening the length of the bottom half of the barrel)?

    The Miquelet

In what way do the Montagnard guns have Miquelet locks? I thought the Miquelet design had sears perpendicular to the rifle stock (horizontal and perpendicular to the barrel when the rifle is aimed level), usually with two penetrations of the stock between the trigger mechanism and the...

Shooting steel ball bearings out of a Pedersoli Bess

Could you not use plastic shot wads/cups with all of round ball, birdshot and buckshot? You'll have to do some testing to find the right size shot cup/wad of course.

    over ball lubricant recommendation

Another "over ball lubricant" technique is to put a drop of engine oil (e.g., 40 weight) atop the loaded balls in the revolver and allow it to flow down to the cylinder wall. This supposedly inhibits crossfire by reducing the flammability of any powder wedged between the ball and the cylinder...

    over ball lubricant recommendation

Several here have indicated that chain fires do not originate at the front of the cylinder. Samuel Colt believed that chain fires could occur from either front or rear of the cylinder. He therefore devised and documented solutions for both. He says so on pages 9 and 10 of the document: "On the...

Interesting report! Where do you buy tow? And what "stack order" did you use to successfully shoot with tow?

Would your flintrock rifle make a good club?

Can you post a picture? A break as you described is probably quite fixable, maybe with no cosmetic change at all on the assembled gun, and I'm sure you can get some good suggestions here or, even better, on the Gun Builder's Bench forum. For example, there's Post: This one I want to work over...

Bass Pro Requires ID Photocopy to Buy BP!

Went to the Bass Pro Shop to get some FFg for a trade gun. I'm old enough that my age isn't a problem. The clerk, "Terry", first asked me "What do you need it for?" which I thought was none of his business, of course. I scoffed and replied "A muzzleloader!" Then he asked for my ID (Texas...

    Pietta lube recommend vs Uberti

" I'm afraid that I subscribe to the vast majority of people who firmly believe that chain-fires happen from the REAR of the chamber, where an ill-fitting percussion cap and worn nipples allow the prodigious flame of ignition to jump sideways, this igniting the adjacent chamber." Colt...

    Older Pedersoli Shotgun?

Unless its beat up, you got a great deal at about half what they're selling for on on-line auction sites these days. Viewing gunbroker today I saw two Pedersoli double shotguns starting at $850 each and one starting at $700. Don't pay any attention to Rifleman1776's pricing. He had one of these...

Minimal Barrel Wall Thickness .36 cal

OK for those who want pictures: IMGUR photo album (5 pictures) of the H & A rifle percussion nipple area that has been modified. My feeling is that cutting out a short section of the barrel and re-breeching it is the best long-term solution.

Minimal Barrel Wall Thickness .36 cal

I have a lovely new (old) Hopkins & Allen underhammer .36 rifle. During it's history, some of the barrel wall around the nipple was removed (ground down?), the brass flash pan recessed into the removed area and a 1/4-28 percussion nipple installed (factory spec is 1/4-32). Around the percussion...

    swaged or shaved?

Great post, Zonie! With so much speculation about the cause of crossfires, Colt's own thinking about causes and possible solutions is priceless. Thank you.
