    Oregon Barrel Co.

I don't know that those are cons. Most original octagon barrels I've examined are square on the end. What kind of breech plug did they install? I don't know of any plugs that have clean outs....patent breeches sometimes do, but not plugs. Anyway, it's easier for a builder to put a clean out...

    Layout fluid?

I had a hard time finding Dykem locally also. The best deal I found on it was through amazon.com. Enjoy, J.D.

    paradox rifling

The confusion arises from the Hastings company marketing their line of "Paradox" rifled replacement slug barrels for shotguns. Excellent barrels, but the only thing they share with H&H's Paradox guns is the name. Enjoy, J.D.

Thanks for the reply. Nice work. Enjoy, J.D.

    paradox rifling

I have found no reference to paradox rifling being used in original muzzleloaders, though admittedly I haven't looked that hard. But, being adopted by Holland & Holland in 1886, I doubt they did any. Suppose it could be done, but doing it in a combination gun, one having two different bore...

What rifle caliber for fall Turkey

And what lesson was that??? When that happened to me several years ago on a damp afternoon deer hunt in Southern Virginia, I learned to never againg use Pyrodex. :shake: Goex has never failed me in damp weather. Enjoy, J.D.

    Chambers Flintlock Kits?

I don't find that building locks from kits that are otherwise available built much of a money saver. Good experience, but the time it takes...... :shake: I'd reserve lock building to castings like those from Jack Brooks, or other locks that can't be easily attained commercially assembled...

    .62 barrel weight...

I think this information used to be in the back of the old Dixie catalogs.....I.I.R.C. Can't put my hands on mine and somebody has one close by, I'm sure. Enjoy, J.D.

Flintlock for a friend - finished my second build

Very nice work! Brew is lucky. My only real critism is, and it could be the light, the lock seems to have the same finish as Chambers ships 'em new. For next time, may I suggest that you polish some, rust the externals to give it some texture, apply some cold blue and rub it back. It will...

    Smoothbore versatility question

I mentioned Caywood above but recall Chambers uses someone else if somebody wants one of their kit barrels jugged choked, I just can't remember his name. If necessary, a call or e-mail to Barbie would find the answer pretty quickly: www.flintlocks.com Enjoy the Journey, J.D.

Problem with location of touch hole

Yep. Either way you really shouldn't attempt it with the plug in as you are not only going enlarge the notch but you want to polish it too. The polishing slicks up the surface so fowlingis less likely to stick. While you're at it you can make sure that the plug face properly seated and polish...

Problem with location of touch hole

All the way across is not necessary, only and angled slot or cone to the breech face. I don't know that a groove would clean all that well, where the angled notch will. Simply make the notch the same diameter as the cone on the inside of the liner and make sure it doesn't obstruct the it...

    Waxed Linen Thread

I'm in that camp. Couple of reasons, one being you only have to buy one color and buying narual in a big spool saves you a lot. Also, you can't dye the waxed threads. Waxing is easy and you can dye the unwaxed natural thread any color then wax. Enjoy, J.D.

    Smoothbore versatility question

If you are measuring .622 at the muzzle it shouldn't have choke as most 20's will measure much smaller than that with choke. But if restrition choked you should be able to tell with a tight brush on a cleaning rod as it will be easier to pull until you get nearer the muzzle. Unchoked it might...

    Shot in a T/C Hawken

....but check your local hunting regulations first. In Pennsylvania rifles in .40 caliber are the largest allowable for small game. Sucks, but true. :cursing: Enjoy, J.D.

    Help with Southern Appalachian Flintlock

If HC/PC is really a concern as you say, then I know of no "kit"/parts set offered by anyone other than Dennis Glazener and his Gilespies that comes close. He has really done all the homework for you and is a very helpful gentleman. No offence to any vendor, but those offered by Tip, Track...

Problem with location of touch hole

....and if you shorten the plug AND the barrel the same amount the vent will still be at the same point on the plug and you'll just have to file a new groove in it's face. Enjoy, J.D.
