    PIONEER POWDER ANYONE?

I've used Black MZ for years for match shooting with great results. Also used it in my flintlock blunderbuss to compete in the first NMLRA's blunderbuss match. No problems.

"Hail Wogdon, Patron of the leaden death..."

Dave--I've handled one Wogdon. What impressed me more than any other feature of his work was the "simplicity and unadorned" nature of the pistol compared to most duellers. He left off anything that did not fulfill the essential mission of delivering a ball quickly and accurately. There is a...

    Reviving/Treating 1850's Dry Walnut Stock

Well said, Zug. Many thanks to you all. I think the issue comes down to either adding oil OR simply waxing it with Renaissance Wax, which I do have. Although I will take a look at all the products that have been mentioned. Tried to capture the stock via a photo, but the pics just don't...

    Reviving/Treating 1850's Dry Walnut Stock

I have a 1850's New England rifle here with a very dry, open pored, walnut stock. What is the best possible way to preserve and protect the stock without refinishing it?

Javelina with a flintlock southern rifle…

Here in Tucson, we cook our javelina whole after removing the primary scent glan, gutting and skinning. We simply dig a hole in a sandy wash, light a big fire using mesquite wood until we have a nice bed of coals, cover the coals with a sheet of tin roofing, smother the pig in barbecue sauce...

Civil War .58 Caliber Musket Ball Diameter

I agree. The best load I have for a .58 rifled musket for a PRB is: 90 grs. FF, 1/4" felt wad and a tightly patched .570-.575 round ball; however, I did come across the mention of a 0.562" CW ball loading (don't have the reference--only a memory).

Removing Brass bands from 1841 Mississippi?

Have just acquired an Model 1841 with a beautiful browned barrel and need to remove the original nipple( stuck) and do some stock repair and reinforcement behind the tail of the tang. What is the best procedure to remove the brass bands without marking the original browning on the barrel?

Was the 0.562" ball the Civil War standard for .58 caliber muskets?

    Best .58 Minie Bullet Mold?

dave951--I appreciate that loading data. Know what you mean about working up a load. What's interesting to me are the loads in the 40's and getting away from the standard 60-grain load for accuracy purposes. These 40ish-grain loads for the .58 caliber musket appear on the Forum from time to time...

    American Pioneer Powder

I've used Black MZ for years as a competitive powder and I have the awards to prove it. Absolutely as fast and consistent as BP using volume for volume. Clean. And you can use it in a flintlock. I shot the first and only NMLRA national blunderbuss match with it shooting a flintlock blunderbuss...

What is the preferred .58 cal. musket target load for the North-South Matches?

Well, Dave's mention of the mid-40's confirms what I remember. That's a great departure from the 60-grain CW load.
