    where have all the.45's gone?

.45s?? What happened to all the .32s and .36s? Ned Roberts in The Muzzleloading Caplock Rifle spoke extensively about those even smaller calibers for such critters as deer and bear. Of course he was talking about dedicated marksmen and real woodsmen who knew how to use their tools and how to...

    Scopes on a percussion....

Scopes, as such, are certainly "traditional" from somewhat before the Civil War. For SNIPERS, not Hunters!! However, modern large lens scopes are not traditional and should not be encouraged on any muzzleloader, IMHO. Muzzleloaders do not have the ballistics sufficient to make clean kills...

Under hammer what do you think?

Love the underhammers I've had over the years, including the current Ruggles style in my Avatar. Nothing inherently right or wrong about them, any more than there is with a side lock, top lock or mule-ear muzzleloader.

    Haversack Cheese

The other option for cheeses, especially here in Florida which is one of the least cheese-friendly outdoor environments on the planet, is to store and carry your cheese in a small (say fist-sized) crock, wooden or bark box like a Shaker box, or even a gourd container.

    .36 Ruggles patent underhammer

Appealing? Their sex appeal. Look at this 24th century "Ray Gun" design from the early-mid 1800s: Yes that is an original First Model Pocket Rifle by Ethan Allen (not the one from the Rev. War) It has an 8" barrel (from the hammer to the muzzle). They sure as heck don't make a firearm that...

    Do Nessmuk formulas work?

Nessmuk was The Real Deal. His formulas work as well as anything available at the time; his techniques and such the same; I've been using them for decades. My Wee Lassie weighs a bit more than his, but then I'm a bit bigger too. The man basically invented what we used to call Ultralight...

    .36 Ruggles patent underhammer

Nice! He sure does a good job! I like the older hammer, too. Mine has the flat hammer. Next time I'll get the older style. Swede - He charges about $125 to $175 depending on barrel length. Makes good looking long arms too.

Welcome DocBob; I got my Ruggles style underhammer pistol from a blackpowder gunsmith in central Nebraska who goes great work.

IF you could only hunt one animal...

Back to hunting critters, not critters used for hunting. My choice of ML game animal would be be Wild Pig in the Southeast, or Javelina in the Southwest. Both are wily targets. Both take some serious knocking down. Both will turn and try to take you out if you don't do your job right. Both...

    Replica pistols on TOW

Those aren't "replicas" in the sense of "fake look-alike but doesn't shoot costume piece". I wouldn't pay $300 for a fake gun. They are importing the guns without touch holes drilled to facilitate border crossing/international BS laws. Without touch hols drilled they can't fire, hence they...

    Gulf Coast

As an anti-pirate piece, I'm thinking of building a 12 ga, or thereabouts, UH pistol using the Cooper style lock -- an L shaped trigger and a long flat mainspring like this: or a carbine version of the UH Yooper Assault Rifle:

    New UH Pistol

Actually Paul's prices are very reasonable. This one, with 6" barrel, set me back $125 including shipping. I had originally thought about a 10"-12" barrel, and that would have been $175. That long of barrel on that style stock just wouldn't look right though; even if I added a shoulder stock...

    Gulf Coast

Ken Hulme here, in Fort Myers, FL. I live aboard a 26 ft sailboat and cruise the islands when the whim takes me. Probably the only person you know who may have to use a muzzleloader to repel real pirates! As my Login indicates, I'm a fan of underhammers and buggy rifles (pistol with detached...

    Mowery .36 Squirrel Rifle

Loved the one I had in .45 too. A real tack-driver. And the company was great to work with too. Lost mine in a divorce too. Sure wish I had it. Today I'd want the .32 or .36 though...

    New UH Pistol

Here's my new toy. 6" barrel, .32 caliber (0 buck is cheap to shoot), copy of the original Ruggles patent action (1825). Made by Rod Olsen from Nebraska.
