Blow out hole on percussion guns

When I read this thread, I felt I should give my experience with the blowout hole. I purchased my first black powder rifle in 1968. I still have it, and it is an original German Jager rifle made in 1848 by GF Stormer. Attached it a picture of the lock and breech area showing it's blowout hole...

    Hawkin ?s

I may be mistaken, but 1 in 36" sounds very fast for a round ball. I would think that would be more for a slug. I made some scratch built Hawken rifles many years ago with Douglas and Sharron barrels, and I believe they were 1 in 66 or 1 in 70" twist for round ball shooting. I think 1 in 36"...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

I like the idea of getting a replacement hammer just for the purpose of shooting the gun again if I choose. It wouldn't have to look anything like the original, just be functionable. I may check out the Dixie catalog to see what might fit. Lamar

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

Can't get the rear view of tig welded hammer to post, but here are finished photos. I'm satisified with the finished work. I couldn't get the browning as good as I wanted, but I think it looks close enough to original. Peter Nagel said I will lose the temper in the hammer. Are there any...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

I want to give an update of my hammer and spur repair. I have gotten the parts back from Peter Nagel of Restorative Welding. I am very satisfied with the tig welding on the hammer. I decided not to do anything with the safety do to the possibility of totally destroying the part. For now, I'll...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

I want to give an update on my lock repair. I have been in contact with Peter Nagel, and emailed him photos. He sounds very confident in doing the tig weld repair. He did say the parts will lose their temper from the welding, and suggested that I remove the spring on the back of the safety. I...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

I don't think I could ever get a duplicate made to equal the fine engraving detail on the hammer and spur as the original. To me, that is more important. I don't have a desire to shoot it anymore, so superior material isn't important. Lamar

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

Gus, I appreciate you checking his web site. I think I will try giving Peter Nagle a call on Monday. Looking at the photos of his work, all his repairs will have to have the welding beads filed down. That doesn't appear to me to require the need of a professional gunsmith to accomplish a good...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

Thanks Gus for all the information. The two links you provided were very informative. As I mentioned before, the number 103 is stamped on all the major components. Attached is a photo of the inside of the lock showing the number. The trigger plate also has the number stamped on the bottom...

    Browning a barrel

I was reading this thread on browning, and I thought it may be appropriate to relate my experience using Plumb Brown over 40 years ago. The year was 1995, and I was building my first scratch built Hawken rifle. I heated all metal parts in the home oven, and then going to the kitchen sink, I...

Here is also a close up of the butt plate with 1848 and 103 stamped. Top view also. If 1848 was a date when the barrel was proofed, it wouldn't be also stamped on the butt would it? Lamar

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

Photobucket was down for a while so I couldn't post any photos. In response to Gus to post more close ups of the broken hammer and spur, I did a couple more photos. First off I want to say that 40 years ago when my spur first broke off, I had someone attempt to silver solder the spur back on...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

I've uploaded some photos to the Photobucket site, so I'm going to try to get them posted. I think it's working, so we'll see. I have many more closeups if anyone is interested. I would still appreciate anyone telling me how I can get more info on the builder of this rifle. The number 103 is on...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

Thanks Gus and Cub45 for the replies back. The rifle was not a converted flint lock. The lock is an original back action percussion. Gus, you stated just as I was feeling. I think I would rather take/send the lock to a reputable restorer. I have been able to Google and find some photos of of...

    Stormer percussion lock repair needed

This is my first post in the muzzle loading forum, so I hope I am posting at the proper site. I have a German Jager rifle made by Stormer of Hertzberg. I purchased the gun as my first muzzleloader when I was 20 years old in 1969. I believe the rifle was made in 1848. I shot the gun a lot in...
