    baker's rifle frizzen

So what you have there is an India made copy of the Baker, and as this is in the Smoothbore section, I take it that it still has it's repro smooth bore barrel, and not the upgraded rifle barrel from Colerain? Technically, a frizzen should be hardened all the way through, not surface or "case"...

    Colt Signature Series Anomaly Question

Are you certain that you got all of his Colts? Did you log all of the serial numbers? Something like that makes me wonder if there is a revolver somewhere that once belonged to your friend with the serial number 34648, and a barrel assembly marked 7471... I think your friend may have...

    Cleetus...a "Flint-cussion" gun?

Looks like a crude attempt to make a DIY tube lock. The tube-lock was from 1831, Instead of a cap, a tube of powder with Potassium Permanganate would be used, and could be inserted into the touch hole. An impact would then detonate the tube, and part of that detonation would reach the main...

Why does the stone need a wrap?

When you write "tested" how many shots, and how many flints.? I ask as it might work with the first few shots, or one flint, but not as a rule. LD

Removing Factory Finish on Traditions Kentucky.

I'd suggest Citristrip. Works well on the Pedersoli muskets that I've had to overhaul in the past. After removing the previous finish, the residue rinses off the stock with water. LD

    Smooth bore recoil?

Actually if one was shooting a .530 ball of 224 grains in the rifle and one was shooting an ounce of shot (438 grains) all other factors being equal, the shotgun has more recoil. More mass one way, more recoil the other way. The reason why he says that is as the guys have written, perceived...

New to flintlock shooting. What to buy?

The first question is how are the laws concerning rifled pieces where you are in France? The Pedersoli Frontier rifle is a pretty reliable piece. ALL flintlocks have interesting characteristics, but the Frontier is quite manageable. I'd suggest one in .54. IF like the UK your region frowns...

    De Witt Bailey

DANG I have read a lot of what he wrote, and have one of his books, and he made a massive contribution to the knowledge base of reenactors and historians concerning what the British Army carried in the 18th and 19th centuries. He will be missed. 😢 LD

What gun for early 1700's Virginia.

I'm happy that my first thought was "dog lock".... and what @dave_person wrote will likely "go" for Maryland folks along the Maryland - Virginia border at the Potomac (aka Potamack) River as Maryland Rangers. LD

Unusual charger on a leather covered powder flask

GREAT PHOTOS FOLKS, THANKS! Very cool, and I wonder if that was thought of as a sort of safety feature? You would be, after all, pouring from a measure, not from a tube still connected to the main powder container with only a brass barrier? True, still a little too close to the main flask for...

    Barrel Browning Question

Yes you may use the same method BUT as with bluing, IF the steel is sufficiently different from the barrel, your results might not match, and there is probably no way of actually getting them to match if that happens. Yes on the lock was usually where it was seen, and Phil is correct that it...

    GARDENING 2024

The old soil has been dumped from the containers, and has had organic material added and is mulching well. This year the plan is to grow, in containers my yard is tiny... WiriWiri Peppers (a Caribbean heirloom hot pepper, my wife is from Guyana) Cayenne Pepper Greek Pepperoncini's because I...

    Round ball and blood trails

Yes I'd agree IF you're going beyond 100 yards, especially if you are shooting beyond 150 you should be using a conical due to the advantages with ballistic coefficient. At 190 yards with my load and sighting distance, my round ball is hitting the earth before 190 yards. LD
