    holes in patch

I made another simple rear sight so was sighting in my old NE 54 at 50y. First 5 shots a good group, most touching. Then 3 shots spread out. Patches from this load have always looked good. But I picked up a patch that had 2 holes were ball bares on the bore. I had spilled some 3f powder and...

    Cheek hold

I think most shooters, like me, pull a rifle back firmly to shoulder. I have not read or heard discussion on cheek pressure.

    TC-Hoyt .58 replacement barrel

A few years ago got a pawnshop .54 Renegade. Since I have 2 other TC's of same bore it's been a project/closet gun. Put Davis Deerslayer triggers, a hunk of walnut and leather with copper nails on butt(15.25" lop) and took a belt sander to comb. Not pretty but it fits well. And I really like the...

    Scouting

ML elk season is September 8-16. Had planned on a 5 day scout trip in mid July. I was just reminded that elk may be in different spot/elevation between July and September. My plan is at 10k' to 12k' elevation. Gonna move those 5 days of scouting in front of the hunt. One trip. I've been...

    Bore anti-rust formula

Heaven forbid I'm seeing a consensus here. An innumerable quantity of substances to prevent moisture from getting to our bores. But most of us use moisture to clean the bore. So the most critical step in the cleaning procedure is to remove the cleaning moisture before we seal it in. I used to...

    chronograph

Does anyone else use one? I find it helpful to find consistent/accurate charge. Then putting the velocity into a ballistic formula gives the trajectory. More helpful to shooters in the great wide open.

    Compare turkey to elk hunting

I have very limited turkey hunting experience. In a discussion with a fellow elk hunter, an accomplished turkey hunter, he said the patience required is the same for both. Over my years of elk hunting I have learned to slow down and work parallel to the ridges. Stop and glass more often; from...

    Ramrod is a poor projectile

I'm shooting my percussion 54 with 30g, 3f, prb when it goes thunk. Ramrod is a poor projectile. Ball traveled about 10" and locked up the ramrod. I tied the rr to the ceiling and pulled down on the rifle, rr breaks. Still have about 6" out the muzzle. I now realize I should have lubed the...

    .36 Rem. and .36 LR?

My 3 rifles and kentucky pistol are .54 bored. In the near future I will have more time to play, to expand the variety. Would a 58 Navy and a .36 long rifle use the same ball. Is there a lead shot size that works?
