Or maybe bearded 18th century re-enactors?

Are you using "real" black powder for the main charge?

Need advice on difficult loading PRB

Everyone's mileage is different, but I suspect you are trying to shoot a patch/ball combo that is too tight I lube with a mixture of 1 part beeswax to 3 parts olive oil for all my guns. I also use a patch/ball combo that I can load with my hickory rod and no short starter. Unless your barrel is...

what do you use when swabbing between shots?

I've never understood the supposed need to swab between shots. Each time a patched roundball is shoved down the barrel much of the fouling is pushed down and rests atop the load, so it is expelled during firing. With a good lube and proper patch/ball combination, this should happen every shot...

Correct! Still nice, but just a nice SMR.

    Decent Flintlock Rifle.

I took my deer last year with a .62 Jaeger. I still love my long guns, but the short guns are fun and they pack a wallop.

    Decent Flintlock Rifle.

If you have Facebook you can look up Jackie Brown. He has been building flintlocks for about 50 years, and reasonably priced, serviceable, no-frills guns are his specialty. I trade a lot of guns, and I have managed to own 7 of his guns. None were fancy, but all got the job done. I own some guns...

    Youth flintlocks?

Youth flintlocks are a difficult find. My son, now 10, began shooting flinters when he was 7. We tested numerous rifles, but all were too long, or too barrel heavy. I finally picked up a Pedersoli Frontier. I removed the barrel, and took it to a machinist buddy. He lopped off 16", while I...

Pedersoli Blue Ridge Rifle, or Kentucky Rifle?

Not to break the current train of thought, but if I wanted a fowler I would look a little harder for one before I bought a rifle that obviously comes in second in your mind. I love fowlers too. I currently have 4 of them, all in flintlock, and use I them much more than I use any of my rifles...

    Rice Barrel back log.

I had a similar problem with a different caliber. I was inquiring with a well-known supplier about an .11 ga. smoothbore kit. I was told there was at least a year-long wait on the barrel. They also use Rice Barrels. I suspect that no one is over-producing ANYTHING in this economy. The...

    cleaning old iron pots

A topic near and dear to my heart! I am addicted to cast iron! I buy at flea markets, yard sales, and auctions; mostly because I enjoy refurbishing it. I use the fire and brush method. I keep a big pile of old white oak barn lumber that has been dry for 50 years. I just build a good oak...

    Stuck round ball

Good looking rifle. Hope all is well when you get it unloaded. I am sure the CO2 thingy is great, but I don't have one. I do have a heavy, solid brass 3/8" range rod that, when coupled with a well made ball puller, will remove just about anything from a barrel. Mine has removed several...

    Are you in Texas?

Large Bore Fowler - Input and Thoughts?

Yeah, I do like the .62. When I sold my last one, I considered other calibers/gauges, as we humans will often do. But, I would have bought the Garner gun, even if I had safe full of .62's. It was one of those that begged to go home with me.

Large Bore Fowler - Input and Thoughts?

Update...Thanks for all the great input. I really wasn't sure what I wanted, I just missed the .62, that I sold. As stated by some, I do have the little .11 ga; but, being a true Kentuckian, I really love long-barreled flinters. I still had not made up my mind when I visited the big CLA...

    smoothbore vs. fowler?

A very interesting topic, but while reading through all the posts I noticed we lost the OP back in May. He probably thought, "Oh Lord, what have I started?"

Large Bore Fowler - Input and Thoughts?

Correct, Capt! I think the .62 is popular because it is also the favorite smoothie for shooting ball. I was in Tip Curtis' shop last week, and he prefers the .54, but again, that is for ball. I have other rifles, so I know for certain that I am only going to use the next smoothie as a...

Large Bore Fowler - Input and Thoughts?

Thanks, Tom. I actually have a short-barreled .11 ga. that shoots very well, despite its' "20 something" barrel. I got several dove with the .62, and it broke clays well, but I thought, like you, that bigger would be better. Jim Chambers has a nice looking Colonial Fowler that is available in...

Large Bore Fowler - Input and Thoughts?

I recently sold my .62 smoothbore, and I am looking to replace it. I am considering a larger bore like .11 or .12 ga. I have several rifles, and use a smoothbore strictly as a shotgun for birds, clays, and an occasional turkey hunt. I will not be shooting ball, and I thought the larger bore...
