    How many years Muzzleloading experience?

61 years, beginning with a Numrich Hopkins and Allen 'boot pistol', which came through the mail with a bullet mold, 1/4 pound of 2Fg, and a tin of French caps - I still have the pistol and most of the original can of caps, which absolutely will not split (at least on a pistol), and had to be...

    German caps?

The original post, by gkainz, shows a can of Dynamit Nobel BB caps, and is correctly labeled for such. A later post, by SDSmlf, shows a similar can of blanks, also properly labeled. But the original question was about the identification of the BB caps (Rundkugel) - which are also identified on...

    German caps?

These are German BB caps, and while nominally 6mm, I think you will find they work just fine in your .22RF arms. PRD1 - mhb - MIke

    new member from bavaria

And welcome from Arizona! In the early 80's, I was the only American member of Schuetzengilde Kornwestheim, and have the greatest memories of my time with them. mhb - MIke

    LeMat Revolver

Tool marks across the tops of the lands are evidence that the barrel was reamed with a dull or damaged reamer, or without sufficient lubrication. Most makers don't bother to lap or smooth the original reamed bore before rifling, but really rough lands are evidence of poor quality control. Tool...

    LeMat Revolver

Several years ago, a friend who has now Gone West had a very nice (in appearance) reproduction LeMat. He wasn't satisfied with the accuracy, though it functioned perfectly. I inspected it and discovered that the .44 barrel had NEVER BEEN RIFLED. The importer/distributor would not replace it...

    Percussion turn barrel pistol question

It is much more likely that the 'guard' is meant to prevent accidental discharge should the pistol be bumped or struck against something in the pocket or elsewhere causing the lower cap to detonate. In every photo of such an arrangement I've seen, the clearance between the 'guard' and the...

Major discoloration of brass after first shooting

Sulfur, and the residue from BP (which contains sulfur) will tarnish brass and copper on contact. If you touch the brass furniture on your muzzleloaders while shooting, the result is what you see. A coat of a good paste wax to the bright brass will protect it for a while, and is easier to deal...

Westley Richards double barrel shotgun. My grandpas gun I dont know anything about it. Any info would help and is it worth anything??

It is neither a Westley Richards, nor a muzzleloader, but a common Belgian breechloader sold under the name 'W. Richards', to take advantage of the better known and better quality British maker's reputation. The buttstock is a replacement, at least one of the hammers is a replacement, and...

    What is belted rifling? (photo)

It is obviously designed to use a belted ball, like the Brunswick rifle, or an elongated bullet with splines, like the Forsyth rifle. mhb - MIke

    Sharps O Ring Breech Mod

For anyone interested in the performance of the original Sharps rifles and carbines, I recommend reading the full range of accuracy testing articles by Bill Mapoles. published in Black Powder Cartridge News - issues 108, 109 and 111, on the slant breech models; and 111 and 116 on the New Models...

    Sharps O Ring Breech Mod

As originally made and fitted, the Sharps percussion models, including the slant breech, did not suffer from the severe gas leaking problem when new and unworn. The Italian reproductions are not as well made and fitted as the Sharps rifles were, and do often leak badly even when new. My friend...

who is this famous person and what are the guns?

Looks more like 'Texas Jack' Omohundro, also born in 1846. mhb - MIke

    What Say Ye!

I'd be equally concerned about the possibility of corrosion: moisture has a way of getting in to 'sealed' chambers and pyrodex is not immune. I'm with the 'pull the load' faction. Then you can inspect the bore and see what condition both the load and the barrel are in. mhb - MIke

    Frizzen advice needed

Be very careful here! It's not just what you say, but how you say it, and to whom, that can get you in serious trouble! In many cases, silence is golden, and safer. mhb - MIke

    rogers and spencer question.

Non-magnetic stainless steels are high-alloyed, with a larger percentage of chromium and other elements. And they are more expensive than typical firearms stainless steels, which are almost universally magnetic. The firearms stainless steels are fully satisfactory in terms of rust resistance...

    John Meunier schuetzen restoration project

rodneys: A couple of things: since your rifle is fitted with a false muzzle, it seems likely that it was intended for an elongated, cylindrical-bodied bullet. My Charles Foehl Philadelphia schuetzen rifle is made for the picket bullet, and has a countersunk muzzle to locate the patch, but...

    How to prevent this?

It is always a good idea to strip and inspect all the parts of any new (or newly acquired) reproduction firearm. The parts are usually in need of smoothing and de-burring - the spring tempered parts are often harder than the parts they interact with, and that is the likely cause of the problem...
