New to flintlocks - Advice welcome

Not sure that I unerstand what you mean. The Frontier has a V notch at the bottom of the buckhorn. That is to be used for the closest zero. Then as distances increase, the top of the blade will be positioned progressively higher. On my Frontier, the top of the blade positioned even with the...

New to flintlocks - Advice welcome

Because a buckhorn sight is meant to be used differently from a V or U groove rear sight. It does not move up and down. So, you adjust for distance by changing the sight picture. Here is a link to a picture of what I mean: Link

New to flintlocks - Advice welcome

I stand corrected about the patch box. It does not have one. My Hawken does. But it does have decorative tacks in the stock, near the butt and in front of the lock. And indeed, the model shown on the Pedersoli website does not have that feature. For the rest, it is a Frontier.

New to flintlocks - Advice welcome

My Frontier has a patch box, which the Blue Ridge does not have, as well as a series of decorative brass tacks on the stock. The wood is also nicer, although not maple burl, like on the Deluxe version. So, in terms of finish and materials, it sits between the plain Blue ridge, and the deluxe...

New to flintlocks - Advice welcome

I own the flintlock Pedersoli Frontier rifle (which is similar to the Blue Ridge, albeit a bit more upscale). The rearsight is a buckhorn, with a notch at the bottom. No need to file down the front blade. Just use different sight pictures, depending on distance. As to ball size and patch...

patch lube question from a greenhorn

I mix one part beeswax with three parts peanut oil. Melt it in an old tincan on the stove and then let it cool. Before it solidifies, pour it into a small shallow jar. Let it turn solid. Rub one side of the patch on the surface of the solid paste and you are ready to shoot.

Snowman Shoot, ends January 31st 2013

I must admit that I made a first attempt at shooting this target in early December, before there was snow on the ground. I did not complete the target (not having placed a bullet in the top smaller ring), because I had precision issues due to blown patches (I used T7). I decided that I would...

Opinions on .32 Pedersoli Pensylvania Hunter

Does anyone here have an informed opinion on the .32 caliber Pedersoli Pensylvania Hunter. I have never handled one. I have only seen pictures of it and read the specs on the Pedersoli website. It looks like a hefty rifle at 8.32 pounds, but not overly so. It is about the only small caliber...

Snowman Shoot, ends January 31st 2013

To avoid the blur, why not mask the other two circles with a piece of white paper, leaving only the one you are shooting at visible?

    percussion caps

RWS 1075 are the best. CCI #11 magnum are OK, but I have had a few duds. You do not want a dud when you have a deer in your sights. For that reason alone, I would go with the RWS caps.

Snowman Shoot, ends January 31st 2013

The three donuts are respectively 9, 7 and 5 cm in diameter. Equivalent to about 3.6, 2.8 and 2 inches, respectively. In the Pumpkin shoot, the target was 3 inches across, and had to be shot at 75 yards. Yet Deadeye scored 5 points short of the maximum score. That is the same level of...

Snowman Shoot, ends January 31st 2013

Indeed, you are not limited to 3 shots. However, you want to take as few shots as possible, because all the shots that are not completely inside the outer line of each of the three donuts, count as penalties. Conversely, if you hit the donut hole,in whole or in part, you get a bonus added to...

    First Deer with PRB.

It must have been a soft-skinned deer. Over here, deer are impervious to anything lighter than .577 T-Rex super uber ultra magnum with special armour piercing tip. Nevertheless, congratulations!

Same thing here. Mine likes the following loads: 90 grains Goex 3F or 70 grains T7 3F.

    Hooked a friend.

Nowadays, the long gun registry only applies in Quebec. If you were to build your own ML, and you live in Quebec, you would have to register it prior to reaching the point where it is a functional firearm. This does not apply to flintlocks, which are exempt from registration, as they are...
