    Hawken accuracy problem

Yes the patch and ball combination needs to be changed for starters. I shoot Triple 7 almost exclusively these days. I also use a larger size ball and patch this .005 patch. I also use Shenandoah Patch lubricant from Midway. Also I would put a new crown on the muzzle of the barrel if the...

WITHDRAWN NICE Pietta Smith Artillery Carbine

This carbine is what us Smith owners call the early war cavalry version as later models came with the saddle ring variation. There were never any official records of Smith Carbines issued to any Artillery units. The Smith Carbine has a rich history as ranked 3rd in numbers ordered and issued...

    Scrap lead interest

Soft lead by definition is dead soft with absolutely no tin in the mix. The lead coming from the scrap yard can be of various products like plumbers lead pipe, roofing plaiting. My point is that with plumbers scrap pipe it can come with a joint still attached which should be cut off and kept out...

    bad caps or hardware issue

Sounds like your nipple has slightly mushroomed enouth to need two strikes to properly seat the cap to strike the rim of the nipple. Had this problem with italian rifle nipples. Just need to slightly file the rim top of the nipple. Problem solved.

Shooting .36 Navies at 100 yards and other fun..

The Colt .36 Navy becomes a much more accurate long range shooter when you pair the cylinder bore to the barrel groove diameter. Ask Gary Barnes about this combination. I had my Navy reamed to a .375 from whatever factory diameter and got a more harmonious outcome with conical bullets.

SOLD Unfired Pietta .50 Smith Carbine

The Smith Carbine patient dates to 1857, and ranked 4th in most used carbine in service of the CW. Originals even saw action in the Battle of Red Buttes up in Wyoming 1865. The originals used hard rubber cases which expanded to more efficiently seal the breech upon firing. Original cartridge...

    Conical in my 45 Cherokee?

You will find a more Harmonious outcome if you protect the base of the bullet from gas cutting when shot. Perhaps wonder wads or a reasonable amount of corn meal filler. Keep in mind that most conical bullet bases do not adequately engage the lands and grooves.

    Sharps problem

I own 2-.54 cal Sharps percussion replicas. The IAB Sharps since they first came out in 1977. That carbine shoots very well. When I got the Armi Sport 63 sporting rifle, it would only shoot if I primed the top side of the nipple with 3fg. So I decided to mark the top of the nipple flat which...

    Best .58 Minie Bullet Mold?

I like a minnie ball that just slightly engages the rifling. Like a RCBS .576 in a minnie rifle designed to shoot .575. First get your rifle and measure the bore. Keeping in mind that the Italians do not produce a progressive depth rifled musket like the originals were.

    Walmart CCI caps misfire

Loja Man Ignition of synthetic powders is a blessing and a curse. One solution not mentioned is putting powder under your cap in the nipple. Not much, but it will vastly improve your ignition . You mentioned that you bought the rifle used. Most likely the breech and flash hole to the breech are...

    question on mildew on tent

Once had this problem with a cotton A frame tent. Took 55 gal plastic barrel filled with 30 gal of water, then mixed bleech in as directed on bottle. I would now use hydrogen peroxide instead.

    Uberti 1858 Remington Revolving Carbine

The cylinder should be bored to match your bore. Italian cylinders are not. This is why I have my 36 Navy cylinders reamed to 375 by a gunsmith.

Getting the best from my Parker Hale

When I owned an Armi Sport 1861 Springfield I was shooting an RCBS .576 minnie. I had thought about going to a .578 RCBS in the 1858 Euroarms. The .576 improved the Springfields grouping a lot tighter. But with the current price of lead, my Enfield replica may just become a wall hanger or get sold.

Getting the best from my Parker Hale

Bisleyjohn, May I inquire as to what country made your replica Musketoon, and 1858 Enfield? I have seen Musketoons shoot inside a 4 inch circle at 100 yards. I own an 1858 Enfield made by Euroarms.

Do you prefer Real Black Powder or a BP substitute?.........Why?

I shoot only Hogdons Triple 7 in my ML black powder firearms. I have shot several 50s in the past with this powder in my Blue Ridge Pedersoli rifle. It allows several repeat shots before I have to clean the barrel. When I clean the rifle I include vinegar swab after cleaning the barrel, dry...

    1851 Navy query

I have taken the cylinders out of my 36 Navies, and taken them to a machine shop to have the cylinders rebored to true .375. This makes for a more accurate percussion pistol that matches the barrel bore. True that undersized balls will kind of sort of bump up in the barrel, but I find the .380...

    Uberti 1858 Remington Revolving Carbine

I enjoy shooting the lee conical in my Remington revolving carbine which was not made until 1866 originally. There is also a 250 gr cast bullet mold out there which will work as well. You will also find that the wafer vegetable wads to be of help shooting the conical bullets. You can still...
