Historical accuracy of left handed rifle

Left handedness in general is not h/c. I don't think many were made at all. I am a left handed shooter, but also always interested in historically correct flintlocks. Shooting r/h guns has never really bothered me, but over the years I have had a couple l/h guns. Historically correct was...

    Lead question

I have used w/w lead for all kinds of roundballs. Just keep in mind it will usually cast a larger ball than soft lead. My Lee .490 throws actual .490's with soft lead. With w/w they come out .492.

    Using tow for wads?

I have used it in my fowler for round balls. Just roll up enough to fit the bore like a very oversized ball. One wad under the ball and one over it. Whenever I have used it, it most certainly comes out smoldering. Do not use it if fire danger is an issue.

Acquiring scrap lead for casting - current state of affairs

I don't have any experience with Minies, but I believe it needs to be very soft. As far as rb's go, if you can easily scratch it with your thumbnail it is good to go. Another good indicator is what size the ball is out of the mold. My .490 rb mold is right on with soft lead, but using hard...

Acquiring scrap lead for casting - current state of affairs

I have yet to find any lead that "isn't worth it". If it is too hard for rifle round balls, it will work for smooth bores and cartridge bullets. If I had to pay top dollar for all the lead I use, I would just as well buy ready made balls and bullets.

Acquiring scrap lead for casting - current state of affairs

My last big "score" came from an ad on Offer Up or Craigslist a few years ago. An industrial machine repair shop had several hundred pounds of counter weights out of equipment they had rebuilt or scrapped. I payed 50 cents a pound for over 300 lbs. They were rectangular blocks between 50 and...

    other than steel shot

My experience is with unmentionables, but bismuth is much more effective than steel. It is also the cheapest alternative at this time. Another advantage is that it is soft enough that you don't have to worry about damaging barrels. I think it is about 85% the density of lead, so bumping up a...

    Left handed vrs right

Well, this thread went exactly as I thought it would. There are leftys like myself who are fine with right handed guns, and others who can't stand them. My best suggestion is still to find a way to get a hold of and try both before making a big investment.

    Another Sky Chief Load Convert

You are correct about the 7 being very effective and containing more pellets than 6 shot. I just know that the reloading data for Hevi-shot always uses special wads to protect barrels and warns about how hard it is. That is even for modern center fire shotguns with barrels designed to...

    Another Sky Chief Load Convert

There is a thread posted in General Muzzleloading with a chart for powder volume/shot weight. 110 grain setting will give you about 1 1/2 ounces of shot. I'm a big fan of Hevi-Shot in modern shotgun shells (other than the price), but be aware that it is very hard. It requires special shot cups...

    Left handed vrs right

There have been several threads about this over the years. I am a left handed shooter and only have right handed flintlocks, and it does not bother me in the least. If you look at past threads you'll see that some other left handed shooters are terribly bothered by right handed flintlocks. I...
