400 yard hits with a patched round ball

Herb, Did you try those figures that I worked out for you or did you not understand how to use them? You should always put the target on top of your front sight (where you can clearly see it)then adjust the difference between the front and rear to hit the target even when your walking the...

    Interesting comment from Tip!

Has anyone contacted Tip to see what he really said or to see if what he said was taken out of context or wheather he said anything about touchholes at all. So& so said so&so is just hearsay. If someone wants to pose the question about wheather bigger is better, he can pose that question...

    GM 32 cal barrel?

If this is one of those drop in barrels for the Renegade/ Hawken then shooting it will be the easy part, LIFTING it will be the hard part but whatever you'll want some .310 balls and some about .015 patches. I have a lightweight barrel and my .32 is very accurate with that combo. Deadeye

    100yd .45 Range Report

Is accuracy just as good with the over powder patch as without. You might try a wetter patch I have 3 .45s and I use a .440 ball and a .013 spit patch (chewed on til it's soaked)I normally shoot 60 grs. of 3F but I've shot as much as 110 and my patches just have a dark spot in the center but I...

    The 5th of July

Smo,about 15 maybe 20 yrs. ago I bought a Seneca with a rusty barrel. I rebarreled it with a GM .45 barrel 36", sighted it in then put it away until couple of months ago I used it for one of these postal shoots and it shot so well that I used it again for this one. Deadeye

    .36 Medium Twist

Yes, your right the longer the bullet , the faster the twist. I imagine JD knows that, probably just having a senior moment. The question though, as I read it, was about the vent on small bores. Deadeye

    .36 Medium Twist

All my flinters, large or small, vent the same from shot to shot, why would there be a difference. Where smokeless guns are usually running 25 to 50+ from shot to shot, BP guns usually run 10 to 15 fps spread. You'll get a larger difference from the consistency of your load than from the...

    Patch or Wad

From many yrs. of shooting and also competing with smoothies and owning 7 of them, my experience has been that using a spit patch of the right thickness to fit your ball to the barrel will give you the best accuracy that YOU will ever get from a smoothie. Deadeye

    By request, Loooong range shoot...

This , probably, has something to do with that thread that been going on for awhile on the forum about shooting 400 yds. I calculated where I needed to hold my sights, picked out a (about 2'X2' rock) lazered at 407 yds. shot offhand except leaning my back against my truck and found that it...

400 yard hits with a patched round ball

Thanks, Grumpa. I also have a 1000 yd. range available nearby where I plan to shoot some 400 Yd. paper targets. Hope to get that done soon. Deadeye

    16 bore ?

I've found .020 smaller than the bore is about right, so .640 with .015 patch. Deadeye

    Ramrod stuck in barrel blues

"What am I doing wrong?" Your using a Delrin rod and moose milk when you should be using a brass rod and spit. IMHO, Deadeye

    Where to find steel rammer

To get back to the original question. I believe you can get a steel ramrod from Dixie Gun Works or you can get a brass one from October Country. Deadeye

    Burning lens

Seems like when I was a kid, every magnifying glass I came across would start fires quickly but after reading some posts here I checked a glass, that I keep here by the computer, and I couldn't even get a piece of paper hot????. I have a Cash box and a couple of others in my ML stuff, took them...

400 yard hits with a patched round ball

FWIW, today was mostly calm and with a rifle(one of my own builds with a GM barrel 32" Hawken style gun, 25.5 sight radius) I already knew where it shot out to 200 yds. and it was easily calculated how much more front sight I needed to hold up over my rear sight to reach 400 yds. .54 cal PRB...

How often do you use your set trigger?

Recently a neighbor called and wanted me to install a single trigger in his TC hawken. He had already obtained the trigger from a well known muzzleloading supply house. What they sold him was a TC double set trigger, just like the one in the gun ,except with everything removed except the front...
