Antique Cannon Construction - Sage Advice Needed

I misunderstood the guy in the video as well the first time. He is using the wrong word, seam, when he means flashing. Ordinarily this kind of mix up wouldn't be a big deal, but in this context, it makes a big difference.

My experience with Walker cylinder gap and some other notes.

I have one with 4, and one with 6.

    Found a hens tooth

I like the 32s and I'm a little jealous. By the time I had the resources to buy one, they had stopped making them. I looked a bit ago and Green Mountain had even dropped all the 32 barrels off their catalog. Very cool.

My experience with Walker cylinder gap and some other notes.

That's a new one for me, but I understand what you're doing there. Thanks for the pics. I'm option C, no bearing caps, split crankcase. 🥳

US Grant’s revolvers sold for over 5 million dollars

Seems fitting that the winner should pay in $50 bills....

    Starting load advice?

One of the aspects of single shot pistols I like the most is that I can vary the charge, especially to the down side. I've shot a 50 cal with as little as 5 grains of FFFg (~360 fps) to 40 grains of FFFg (~1040 fps). If your main use is paper targets or tin cans, I would start on the lower side.

    Wheel lock kits

That was interesting; looks like a few people made some nice wheellocks out of those kits, with a fair bit of work and new springs. ...I'm getting the build a wheellock bug again, too.

I've not seen a wedge bearing before, do you have a picture you can post or link to?

    Wheel lock kits

I've not heard of them. Do you have any pictures of the parts? Something you have already, or are looking to acquire?

    Paper Cartridge Woes

I recently got some of those hair papers and I am going to try powder packets as well. I don't like handling loose powder at the range and I'm not trying to be historically correct, so I think that's a good option. I'm curious how you go with them and if you have any tips once you try them out.

That includes the premium, the hammer price was $4.4M.

    External Mechanisms on Matchlocks

It is a pistol, 50 cal, 10" barrel.

    External Mechanisms on Matchlocks

I did make that wheellock. It's based on the Lauber book plans....loosely. I made it a while ago, and plan to do another sometime, it was fun to make.

    Revolver Capper

I did the same with a few of those straight cappers. A little file work and they fit well in the small area that a revolver affords.

    External Mechanisms on Matchlocks

Thanks. I read the original question as: historically incorrect, Rube Goldberg matchlock ideas, so that is where I was going with my comment. I took it as a "crazier the better". Also, words are not my strong suit, so what was in my head, may not have out properly....

Should the powder charge be equivalent to the caliber?

There has to be something else going on there. 45 grains of powder is a lot of energy. I put a 50 cal pistol across a chrono and I'm over 1,000 fps with a 0.490 ball with 40 grains of FFFg. Maybe a difference of looser ball/patch combo in one?

    External Mechanisms on Matchlocks

My suggestion would be a trigger connected to a rack and pinion to move the serpentine, with a linkage to automatically open the pan cover. I've never seen that on a period piece, although none of those things was uncommon at the time.

    DUAL-caliber early matchlock!

I'd like to know more, is this out of a book? If so, what book, if no, where did it come from? Making the negative of the rifling wasn't necessary, but WOW!! That is some impressive work.

FYI, ‘crumbly’ pyrite works in a wheelock

FYI, the geologic term for the lumps of minerals with no real crystal structure is "massive". The edges you are looking at that look saw cut are probably the natural crystal faces of the pyrite. I use massive pyrite in my wheelock as well, because I collected it for free from a mine I used to...

    Filler

Someone on the pistol page is looking for 36 cal revolver balls. You could probably sell them and buy whatever floats you boat and not have to compromise.
