Any BP Shooters in Central Kentucky?

I live in Richmond, Kentucky (Central Kentucky) and so far, have not found any club, individual, places to shoot, or a store that sells black powder “stuff.” I can’t believe that no one in Central Kentucky, especially where Daniel Boone roamed, shoots black powder but me. Any help you may be...

    BP Cleaning

About 10 years ago, when I first got into BP, I purchased a spray bottle of Hornady One Shot Muzzleloader Cleaner NH. It states on the bottle it is a Cleaner and Protectant. I placed the bottle in a cabinet and completely forgot about it. I found it today, still sealed in the plastic wrap it...

    Looking For Lead

I’m looking for lead, as I guess many people on this site are. I have never bought lead before, preferring to buy lead balls premade. I have now decided to begin making my own RB’s. Any suggestions as to where to look for lead and what would be a good price per pound? Thanks.

Round or Square Patches? Is There Really a Difference?

Does it make any difference if patches or square or round? Square is a lot easier to make, but should I spend the extra time and energy to make them round? Does the shape of your patch really affect accuracy? Your comments are appreciated. Thanks!

    Priming Your Rifle

I read an article on flintriflesmith.com that said historical evidence shows priming horns were not used until the mid to late 19th century. What do you use for priming your rifle?

    Is This Possible?

Back in the 50’s I saw a movie where a good guy, in a cabin, was frantically loading his muzzleloader as fast as he could because a bad guy was breaking in the door. I don’t remember if it was a smooth bore or rifle. The bad guy broke in just as the good guy was ramming the ball down the barrel...

    What Caliber?

I want to order a Kibler Colonial Rifle Kit in the near future, but I am somewhat conflicted as to what caliber to order. All of my black powder experience has been with a .75 caliber Brown Bess Musket. This will be my first BP rifle. The Colonial Rifle kit is available in .50, .54, and .58...

Brackets to Hang My Brown Bess

We just moved into a new to us house. It has a beautiful brick fireplace in the family room/kitchen. The fireplace has a large firebox and a mantel made from a floor beam removed from a local home that was built in the mid-1800s. My wife now wants to hang my Brown Bess over the fireplace. Do...

    New Patch Knife

This past weekend I was at the Smoky Mountain Knife Works. I picked up the patch knife you see below. The knife has a doo-dad on the blade just in front of the handle. Does this have a name and what is it for? Thanks, Jack

Colonial Long Rifle vs Kentucky Long Rifle

What is the difference between colonial long rifles, like those made during the 18th century, and those of Daniel Boone’s day? I have been shooting my smoothbore Brown Bess for a while and I am now interested in a flintlock long rifle.

    Holes in a Cartridge Box

Hi All. I purchased a new cartridge box for my paper cartridges that will be used in my Brown Bess. The holes in the block are so small that a 0.735 naked ball will not fit in the hole. The ball is just about the same size as my bore. I am going to make a new block to go into the cartridge...

    Making Paper Cartridges

I have tried newsprint as a paper for making paper cartridges but have found it tears easily. What have you found to be the best paper for making paper cartridges? I want to make cartridges for my Brown Bess. Thanks.

    Musket Balls

In preparation for shooting black powder and my Brown Bess for the first time, I purchased some 0.715 balls. I noticed that they have a small protrusion on them that I assume was formed from where the lead was poured into the mold. Should I remove this protrusion with a file before loading?

    "Traditional" Kentucky Rifle?

When somebody is referring to a "traditional” Kentucky rifle, such as one used in Daniel Boone's day, does that mean a flintlock or precession rifle? Thanks.

    How to Nap A Flint

In the thread “Want to Shoot My Brown Bess,” I received a lot of very useful information. Thanks to all who replied. I’m looking forward to getting to the woods very soon. I was able to borrow a microchronometer and discovered my 0.75 cal musket is actually 0.739, so I am going to try making...

Want To Shoot My Brown Bess

A number of years ago I purchased a Brown Bess musket from Gunbroker. It was stamped with Dixie Gunworks. I contacted Dixie Gunworks, and from information they requested, they identified the musket as being made by Miruko of Japan between the early 1980’s to the late 1990’s. It is .75 caliber...

    What Do I Have

Many years ago, on a whim, I purchased a reproduction of a Brown Bess on GunBroker. I grew up the Williamsburg, VA, area and have always been intrigued by muskets. It is a beautiful weapon but I don’t know much about it. On the left side of the barrel is stamped Dixie Gunworks along with a...
