Vmax to make a PRB skid/slip across the rifling?

Has a maximum velocity been tested for that would cause a PRB to loose its grip in the rifling grooves and start to skid across the lands, call it Vmax. No doubt that a tight or loose fit of the PRB to the bore will change the potential Vmax slip point in the same barrel and rifling twist rate...

Patch Lube - What Qualities/Attributes Are Required?

Discusion of Patch Lube - What Qualities or Attributes are Required? In researching patch lubes on this forum I learn that anything slick, oily and greasy can and has been used as a patch lube. For my own use I advocate the Dutch Schoultz "Dry Lube" method slightly modified (I add...

    Shooting Bag Strap Attachment Point"

I'm ThInking of designing a new shooting bag and can't decide on the best place to attach the should straps to the bag. I could put the straps not the back but I thought that would interfere with opening the bag flap all the way back for a clear view to the interior. Sided gusset attachment...

Will a flintlock spark in very cold weather?

I was wondering if anyone has experience shooting a flintlock firearm in very cold -15 to -25 degrees C weather? I'm not sure a hot spark would be produced (cold frizzen) or retain enough heat energy to ignite the cold priming powder.

I need to carrying two bags

I stitched together a Tandy Leather Black Powder Shooting Bag, it turned out real nice once I got all assembling and stitching screw ups corrected. Now when I try to use it I've run into two problems. 1) Lot of dangling leather straps, not sure how to use them. I suspect their for tying...

First Shots fired in my new GPR

I fired my new Lyman Great Plain Rifle (GPR) .54 cal. yesterday. I used the OEM supplied cut agate flint and the lock never failed to spark, the priming ignited ever time. I dry balled the loading twice (back to back screw ups) but removing the lock and the vent liner I was able to pour in...

Brushing out the GPR patent breech

Finding the proper size cleaning jag?

I find my jag patch combo impossible to insert into the muzzle. I have a 45 cal flintlock, I'm using what is supposed to be a 45 cal cleaning jag that measures .425" diameter with Butch's triple twill patches that measure .011". I don't want to have to hammer this combo into the bore I'm sure...

I will be receiving a new Lyman GPR flintlock 54 cal. soon. Tungsten carbide as a flint replacement?

Has anyone tried to use a piece of tungsten carbide sized and shaped like a cut agate flint in their flintlocks? It would probably last a long time, but would it make sparks? If it would spark like natural english flint (or better) I suspect the frizzen would have a life span the same as being...

Greetings to all from another new member

Hello forum members. My interest in BP rifles goes back to 1977 when I purchased a H&R "Huntsman" model 156? .45 caliber. I shot this rifle a lot mostly with round balls I cast myself. I did shoot some conicals I cast but I liked the rb better. I built a CVA Kentucy long rifle kit a flinlock...
