SOLD REDUCED Custom .45 Poor Boy Rifle

Possibly out of the West Virginia Muzzle Loading Association, established 1977. They might be able to ID it.

A new high price for a T/C Hawken

A lot if it comes down to time of year and where you live. I've picked up some nice muzzle loaders for way less then they go for in auctions by going to gun shows. The bigger, the better. I always see at least a couple of vendors with BP rifles. 99% of the buyers are looking for ammo, black...

    Greed

On the old Yellow airgun forum the rule was when you posted "I'll take it!", brother you better had, else you would find yourself sat out for a month, reasonable excuses accepted. What has surprised me is not so much any line jumping but the kibitzing and copious commentary I see in the...

    Pedersoli Kodiak Doubles

Regarding the .54's, an old Gander Mountain catalogue listed the twist as 1:66. I picked up what I believe Is an unfired .54 and, I should haul it out and measure it. This one is the Cabelas model with a bag grip. I figure round balls ought to tame the recoil. There are no elephants or Cape...

    FOR SALE Scammed also.

If the transaction involves a gun PayPal will wash their hands of it as such sales are prohibited. Even air rifles. And, from what I understand, PayPal "Friends and Family", used by some to avoid the fee, has zero recourse. One thing a person might do is contact the seller and ask for a dated...

SOLD Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter **SPF**

I think these were simply sporterized Zouaves. I could compare mine to my musket, both 1972 vintage, but I doubt it will be heavier at the breech. To me they are likened to the sporterized muskets sold to pioneers following the Civil War.

    Polishing Brass

When I was in the Navy, when we were told to "polish up the bright work", we hauled out the trusty can of good old NeverDull, the sailor's friend. A wad of that stuff would have the brass gleaming in no time at all. Of course, two days later you never knew it had been touched. (Why it was...

SOLD Pedersoli 12 Gauge Double barrel

Saw a post where Italian makers measure choke size in tenths. If your gun follows this then 4/10 = Modified and 8/10 = close to Full (9/10).

Cap popped, rifle didn't fire, until later

When I first got into this game, many years ago, I was at my local range and a guy came up to me with what looked like an old CVA "Colonial" percussion pistol, saying he wasn't sure he was doing things right with it. He had just received it from a friend who built it for him. As he talked about...

    coffee grinder in stock

My collector's club meets monthly in the conference room beneath the NRA's museum and national headquarters. (Yes, we are VERY lucky!) We usually have a presentation on those nights and one was on the Sharps (slant breech?), with several guns from the NRA collection. Among those was a coffe...

    Is It Just Me?

If a scope keeps you in the field, so be it. But I wouldn't add one to a nice custom gun. There's a chapter in one of my black powder books about a guy (Al Georg?) who hunted with an 1858 Remington and a .36 H&R underhammer, both fitted with scopes. He wanted to show just how effective a BP gun...

Colonial era blackpowder vs today's black powder.

I believe towards the end the CSA was using sugar and bat guano. Saw a show about a cave from which the guano was secretly harvested and the equipment used to shift it. Considering how detrimental to their health that was, it's a measure of their desperation.

    Minie Ball Skirt Expansion

Skip the Crisco. The first BP gun I ever shot was my Zouave back in '73. Having read up on what the ex-spurts advised, I lubed the bases. After a couple of rounds I started having hang fires. No thank you. Oh, and I was shooting 65 grains, too. Wearing a thin T-shirt, that brass butt plate made...

Intrest in a Gardner Bullet mold?

I'm not sure but I think the stud on the wiper is also zinc. Might have to look at some I have.

normal/safe for someone who only has a percussion rifle to keep loaded without the cap for home def?

No matter what vintage loaded gun you keep in the house, it ought to be safely stored. Even if everyone in the home is the best gun handler ever, you have to consider guests, especially kids. And no one stays home indefinitely. Guns left in the nightstand are numero uno for house breaking.

    Any substute for lead?

There is a thread here on shooting brass balls. (Stand by for more jokes.)

    1851 Pietta nickel/gold played "bargain"

Just tried a small magnet. It only went for the screws, so I'd say it is brass framed. Not such a big thing in my case but I sure wouldn't have been happy paying $400 for one of these, as I've seen similar Piettas going for. Wouldn't have broke the bank to use steel. I guess these are meant for...

    1851 Pietta nickel/gold played "bargain"

Never thought of that. Will do and a BIG thank you! For anyone contemplating shooting one of these, I'm thinking the fouling might have reacted with copper in the gold alloy. I would clean the cylinder just as soon as possible.

    Revolver ID Please :-)

I've been told the reddish cast is due to the amount of iron in the alloy. Often seen on parts of old .22's.

    1851 Pietta nickel/gold played "bargain"

Thanks. Might give them a call. Found a new blued screw on fleabay but the seller wants more to ship than he's asking. I see Cabelas has extra blued cylinders which would actually look nice. This was one of those offered with a basic kit. It is a 2011 or 2012 Pietta.
