    New guy from New Jersey

Welcome from another detainee of the People’s Republic of NJ - for now. From Somerset County and happily an easy escape to Dixon’s in Kempton.

    Dixi Gun Works Disappoints.

That’s sad because his step-dad Turner Kirkland was a very nice man who’d take the time to speak with you no matter how busy he was or who you were. I began ordering from the catalog when I was only 11, and once called and asked to speak with him and he got right on the phone and cordially...

To tack or not to tack, that is the question…

No, I wouldn’t do it. That looks to be a nice rifle. Tack it and you’ll later come to regret it. So I say, leave it as is and shoot the heck out of it.

    char cloth

Check out David West’s channel on YouTube. He has a very good episode on making char from punk wood.

    Bob Hoyt

Has anyone dropped off a barrel to his shop? Just wondering if he accepts drop-offs as I'm in his vicinity (Gettysburg) on a regular basis.

    CLOSED Investarms percussion lock

Lyman GPR and Trade Rifle locks should fit as they were made by Investarms.

    Wax,,,oil,,,???

I’ve been using Johnson’s Paste Wax on the stock and the barrel (outside) for a very long time and from a can that I bought more than 20 years ago. I also like Butcher’s Wax for the same purpose.

    Sending barrels to Mr. Hoyt

Don’t attempt to pull the plug on a CVA percussion barrel! Wasn’t meant to be disassembled. The drum is integrated into the plug and trying to get it - plug and drum - all back together and properly aligned is a bear to say the least.

Curious, How do you clean your Pinned barrel Rifle or Smooth bore?

Was just going to suggest this video to the OP but thought I’d check here first and sure enough Mark posted his excellent video.

    what does one do?

Use them in your fire starting kit. Don’t need much of a flint to get sparks with a steel.

    It’s getting pretty bad!

Powder and caps are the two things I need that I can’t or won’t produce for myself and hopefully will back in full supply soon rather than later. What I don’t get is the idea that people are said to be leaving the hobby yet the prices and demand for muzzleloading guns is higher than it’s ever been.

    How old are ya?

67 and have been shooting ML for 56 years.

Flint and Steel Kits for Teaching Youth

I wanted to do the same thing with our BSA troop and needed about 10 flint and steel kits. After talking with the late Mike Amelung who I got to know on this site, he suggested I use old, worn-out American-made files as the strikers. Using as angle grinder I was able to cut the files into 3”...

    50 vs 54 FlintLock Rifle

I shoot mostly from a stand and take most deer within 40 yards. Have used both .50 and .54, but prefer .54 as they seem to go down faster without having to follow a long blood trail, especially here in central NJ where they’ll sometimes expire on neighboring non-hunting lands if not knocked down...

    PayPal users beware

If they did, it would be grist for a great class action suit against them.

Trying Buck & Ball loads with smoothbore fun...

Great video, Mark. Informative and entertaining. Do you think doubling up on the card wad or a thicker fiber wad would make for a narrower spread?

Gun Maker's Fair at Kempton; formerly at Dixon's

For those attending the fair but short on hard cash for a purchase, there’s an ATM at the Krumsville Inn, located just off the Route 78 exit at the crossroads of Rt 737 and Old 22.

    Interesting percussion rifle.

Yes, those Dale Storey mule ear rifles were profiled in a book Sam Fadala and Dale Storey co-wrote. Wish I had one of those guns as they were excellently crafted guns. I, like you, was fortunate to obtain a Pioneer Arms mule ear and mate it to a GPR flinter. Fast ignition. Love that gun...
