repairing a crack in an old cast iron pot

In my work career I repaired a lot of cast iron. heavy equipment parts to no few cooking utensils. First thing you ought to think about is the value, if it's as old as you say a repair may ruin the antique value. Find a good welding repair shop, ask around about their work if you can. Be...

    Lee round ball moulds?

Another pitch for the Lee molds. Going on 70 and reloading for 50 years I never got around to casting my own. The cost of factory made bullets, including plain lead round balls, was getting to the point where it was pinching my pension. The 2 cavity Lee molds were a fairly inexpensive way to get...

    Lee round ball moulds?

You do get what you pay for, sorta kinda. The Lee molds are such a good price and generally of such good quality combined with good service that they're hard to pass up. I only have 3, but they have been perfect in all regards.

    Green Mountain barrels

A kinda sorta update. The original thread was brought to life by someone wanting to know the status. The OP replied that a gunsmith still has his gun and has been unable get it apart! I wonder if this poor guy will ever see his rifle in working condition again.

    Seen these?

Cool! Remember Barny's Cannons way back when. Was always going to buy one from them and never got it done.

    Seen these?

http://www.blackpowder-cannons.com/ Guy has some nice looking miniatures. Wish he had a field gun up around half inch.

    Green Mountain barrels

Not a lot of people have the tooling to do it themselves.

    Green Mountain barrels

It was a .50. Any number of ways to come up with a socket type affair if a little ingenuity is used. Around here thin wall tube in aluminum or brass is pretty easy to find. 3/8" will run over a .50 caliber brush. The thread where this was going on has pretty well died, whether the guy will come...

    Green Mountain barrels

Reference some of the recent comments. Some strange ideas to come from a bunch of BP muzzle stuffers. Really only two suitable methods to recover a broken off brush. A length of tubing just the right size to be pushed in over the lost brush and alternately running a smaller caliber brush down...

    Green Mountain barrels

He was using a brand new T/C brush, how it broke off at the bottom of the bore is unknown. I've stepped back from making any more comments, too many "experts" telling him to clamp the barrel in a vise and "just" unscrew it. :surrender: At least he didn't do that and I guess has given it to a...

    Green Mountain barrels

    Yup

    Green Mountain barrels

That's what myself and several others have told him to do, anyway he can't seem to get it out that way. I just hope the guy doesn't wreck a good barrel.

    Green Mountain barrels

Thanks BB, that's what I was thinking. On a forum devoted to modern center fired there is a guy got a brush broke off down in the chamber. Bunch of guys keep telling him to just unscrew the breech. Only thing similar I have is a T/C Hawken and the breech sure ain't meant for bubba to clamp in a...

    Green Mountain barrels

Do the regular ML hook breech barrels have a removable breech plug? I was thinking they didn't.

    Jag stuck

I've thought about lapping that barrel, but I'm mainly a centerfire shooter and just always have a new rifle to work with :)

    Jag stuck

My rifle is stored with the wood rod because it's a pretty thing. I never use it to shoot though!

    Jag stuck

I bought an older T/C .50 Hawken and I stuck a few patches. I finally made some carbon scrapers and you wouldn't believe the amount of crud I got out from down there around the chamber! The barrel is still in pretty poor shape with lots of pitting and I have to swab every few shots or I can't...

    digging yer own lead

Was it in it's native state? That's pretty rare, not many places where native lead is found. In fact I think it can be worth a lot as specimens. I've never seen it, but I've seen some pretty huge pieces of native copper found deep in some Arizona copper mines.

    digging yer own lead

There's some danger in clambering around in old underground mines to be sure, but I sure used to do a lot of it :) Places you find that are small surface cuts are where they were high grading a rich vein that was exposed at the surface. Either it wasn't rich enough to continue going deeper or...

    500 yard target

Pretty darn fine 500 yard shooting! One in the 6 ring is a bummer.
