    Ballistol fumes?

Seems like someone posted on the forum a few years ago that if you would leave the top off a bottle of Ballistol the smell would go away. Don’t know if this would effect how well it works or not. Whatever causes the odor probably plays a part.

    Tow

I may be going for the gold medal in the crazy event but, when going for an aged look on the barrel and lock I first rusted everything. Then applied 44/40 instant blue and rubbed it back to my liking with steel wool. Now I just clean and oil. No rust. Of course this won't do anything about the...

For me it's cool water (hot water causes flash rust) until the patches come out clean, then dry the bore with a couple more patches, then 91% alcohol, then gun oil, then forget it till I get another chance to shoot.

    Ballistol fumes?

Your not alone friend. I'm not to crazy about the smell either. It works but if I can smell it then the animals can too. I'm going to try Birchwood Casey's Barricade.

    Howdy ya'll from Tennessee

You’ve had to have learned a lot in those 50 years. A lot of us could probably learn from you. Feel free to jump in anytime and welcome.

Looks like Mike has gone and give some of the guys an excuse to get together and make smoke. Chattooga county here.

    Some Stone Knives

Don't want to highjack Pete's post but may be interesting if someone would start a post on knapping nightmares. I don't think many people could get as good as Pete without a box or two of bandaids.

And in my case, learning when to say when. Sometimes just a little thinner results in two halves. :(

Hello Mike and welcome to the forum. I checked out the pics of your rifle and while I don't know enough to make a call on it I will be following the post. This is going to be interesting. Good looking pup in the picture, I've got one just like it.

    Thoughts on the smoothrifle

I want one of them all, but if I could only have one gun it would be a smooth rifle.

    Contentment.

Well put brother. I'm much the same. A friend of mine once told me that I was maturing as a sportsman. Boy that was a relief, I thought I was just getting lazy!

Seeking advice on a Long Rifle for 1st flintlock purchase

Knowing what I know now I would have started with a smooth rifle. The look of the rifle and the ability to shoot shot or round ball.

    Flint to percusion

If I don't keep my flint adjusted right the frizzen will not swing open. At half cock I want my flint about 1/16 from the closed frizzen.

    Less interest in my caplocks

I'm on hanshi's side. There are ways to protect your flinter from mother nature but when the weather gets rough I whip out my lap top, get in the easy chair, go to the muzzleloading forum and read about it! :surrender:
