Need opinions/suggestions/ideas- old TC Hawken .50 project

^ That last part is high on my list, Rifleman, but I should take care of some of my student loans first. ;) Again, thank you all for the input. And yeah, BrownBear, I noticed the former owner's attempted stock work. Thankfully it ought to disappear once the stock reaches its final shape...

Need opinions/suggestions/ideas- old TC Hawken .50 project

Thank you all for your quick replies! I really appreciate all the input. I will certainly be re-working the stock to some degree, MSW, and from the looks of it I think it will be quite nice with just some basic work. I will definitely look into those parts and trigger, BrownBear, and I'm...

Need opinions/suggestions/ideas- old TC Hawken .50 project

Hey everyone, Well, now that I've graduated college (and will be starting a full time job on Monday), I actually have MORE time to indulge projects and hobbies, and really get back to shooting my guns. But enough about that. My father has been itching to get a front-stuffer all his own since...

    Change Zoave sights ?

Hey all, Well, on the question of sights, let me offer this: Standard military leaf sight configuration for the time, as on the Zouave, 1861, 1855 and Mississippi variants is as follows- leaf 1, 0-200 yards, leaf 2, 300 yards, leaf 3, 500 yards. In order to get these weapons shooting...

    Change Zoave sights ?

I agree and disagree here, both from experience. A: Repro rifle musket/rifle sights such as those that are factory standard on guns such as the Zoli, Euroarms, and Armi Sport offerings leave much to be desired. The notches are often much too wide, and the sights lack stability under recoil...

    .58's With Oversized Bores

Also, just so you know- it is not uncommon for them to have undersized bores, either. Mine comes out at .578. It all depends... -Chris

    Patch-over-minie for rifle muskets?

Hey all, I'm going to be taking the reenacting/shooting season off this summer- call it a "rebuilding year" - and will be working on more accurate skirmish/hunting/target loads for this little darling: M1855 Rifle Musket So, in lieu of that, I have bullets, 3f powder out the wazoo...

    Tang Sights on a GPR

Ron- As a reenactor, I completely understand what you mean! Normally, I do a Confederate impression- an Irish immigrant serving with 'Stonewall' Jackson out in the East. That's where my M1855 RM gets the most use. I also shoot with the ACWSA. In a sense, I'm already knee-deep in the PC/HC...

    Tang Sights on a GPR

Ron- I'd love a Whitworth! I've often contemplated it, but like I said, my finances are very tight right now (I am in college) and the GPR is by far a more economical platform to start with. I think fair market value for a Parker-Hale or Euroarms Whitworth is anywhere from $1000 to $1500...

    Tang Sights on a GPR

Well, I'm not really planning on using it for a competition, per say. I might set up an NSSA reg. 100 yard target (has an overall diameter of about 1'9", with a 3" X-ring I think  ) at 300-500 yards. I don't have any REALLY long range locations available to me where I live, and no...

    Tang Sights on a GPR

Hi all, I am considering working on a GPR kit as a summer project. My thought was (and others have done this, but I haven't been able to find the site on the internet since I saw it) to build the GPR as a custom Northern civilian Target Rifle from the Civil War period- a gun exclusively for...

    Armi-Sport Zouave question

Gunhawk- Welcome to the forum! I'm glad we have another amongst our ranks. Before I start, I want to thank you for your service to our country. This means a lot to all of us on this forum. Now, down to business: 1: On the question of authenticity, I'm glad you have educated yourself on the...

    Enfield 58 balls...?

Couple things to note here: The Original Enfield was .577 caliber. The Euroarms are 'close' to .58. What you need to do is get your bore size determined, first. You could do this with a caliper (how, I'm not exactly sure, but I'm sure someone here will tell) or have someone with a set of...

    I'm an idjit-Stuck ramrod

I have to agree with kanawha. When I'm cleaning my rifle-musket, I use a .58 caliber range wad I got at Lodgewood Manufacturing for piece meal. Best investment I ever made. It has grooves in the jag that use the suction of a wet patch (suitably sized) to keep the patch in place. I haven't...

    long range target shooting

David, The Euroarms, as I recall, has the same ROT as the original- Hex 1/20". Now, if only I could find a Kerr and some paper-patched bullets... -Chris

    Springfield m1842 musket

I stand corrected, but that's certainly strange. If it's not a Fremont- and I don't think it's civilian, either- then it must be similar to certain 'Rifle Length' guns cut down during the war as arsenal conversions that were mentioned earlier, I believe. Speculation, of course. Still a...

    Springfield m1842 musket

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is an original Fremont...the work looks to neat- the few cut-downs I've seen don't have the distinctive nose cap anymore. This is to neat a job for postwar- it looks like a military arsenal conversion. Check out the Fall Creek Sutlery home page under...

    Hardened Balls?

The bit I've heard on this pertains mostly to Minie Balls. The hard skirt does expand, but the relative thin-ness of the skirt makes it brittle (I guess- deduction), so when it locks in it leaves behind leading (more than normal lead), fragments, or worse- a whole skirt. Not so much a problem...
