Shooting the Lyman Great Plains Hunter

My GPH is most accurate with MaxiBalls. I tried a lot of different bullets.

    Just ordered from Tip Curtis

I stopped in his shop just about a year ago on a road trip back east and spent a couple of hours there. Interesting guy to talk with; has his strong opinions for sure but he's been around and has earned that right. I was expecting he would have more finished guns in stock than he had, but he had...

    American Mountain Men

I can provide a little perspective on a newbie's experience with the AMM, as I'm actually in the process of working through my requirements to reach the Bosslopper level (which is the lowest true membership level where you have a member number). So right now I'm probationary, called a Pilgrim...

Peeps on my southern mountain rifle?

I've seen several original muzzleloaders at a private gun museum in NM that were equipped with peep sights that appeared to be original to the gun or at least very old. I'll try to see if I can find pics, and then will see if I can figure out how to post them. They were obviously rare in the...

    Pedersoli 1841 Mississippi Caliber

I too had a Navy Arms Mississippi years ago, in 58. I tried a lot of different bullets in that gun and never got it to shoot like I wanted, but I never did try a patched round ball as people said I probably wouldn't get good accuracy using stiffer charges of powder. There's is something about...

    .54 caliber on the way

I had the same problem with sharp edges and filed them down. I got unlucky with my GPR in that the stock wood was apparently soft and the tang screws wouldn't stay tight for anything. I eventually had a guy put a new, hard maple stock on it, which solved that problem. I also had him solder...

    Lyman GPR Hunter

I get great accuracy in my GP Hunter using TC Maxi-Balls, with 100-110 grns of 2f, and a wad between the powder and the bullet. I tried several weights of Lee REAL bullets and they didn't group as good, same with the GP bullet.

    Montana Muzzleloaders

I believe that Garcia's story period in Tough Trip Through Paradise was around 1877 rather than in the 1850s, right after Chief Joseph went through.

    GPH problems need advice

Thanks Brownbear for the detailed response, I appreciate your taking the time to explain that procedure. I may wait till this winter to tackle this. Between work, hunting and fishing, cutting firewood, etc., the fall always goes way too fast.

    GPH problems need advice

Hi Brownbear, thanks for the response. In Ethan's defense, that is exactly what he said to do, i.e. just enough epoxy to hold it together and then heat it later and break the two pieces apart. However, I have heard of target shooters permanently fusing the tang to the barrel and claiming some...

    GPH problems need advice

Thanks for the input guys. 2 Tall I think you are right about the alignment of barrel and tang, with the recoil pulling up on the tang screws. I spoke with Ethan at TOW today and he agreed that the tang is probably slightly off angle. He also said that one thing that people have done is to...

    GPH problems need advice

I posted back in the spring about a loading problem I was having with a new Lyman GPH and got some good advice from folks here, which was much appreciated. However after months of working with this gun, I'm still having problems. I'm hoping to get some more advice. Here's my saga. To deal...

    1841 Mississippi Rifle

I bought a used one at an NSSA shoot back in the 90s and messed with it for several years. Loved the looks of the gun and killed a few deer and turkeys with it, but I never got it to shoot well and I tried a variety of bullets and balls. I believe it was a Navy Arms, maybe from the 80s. Sold...

Hello from the Palisades Range Idaho

Correction, I meant to say that Mr. Fitzgerald is now deceased, for several years I believe.

Hello from the Palisades Range Idaho

Hello All, I recently discovered this forum and have been amazed by the wealth of knowledge here. I've been into Black Powder off and on since the late 70s, when I bought a CVA mountain rifle and a Navy Arms cap and ball revolver as a teenager in Virginia. Both were great shooters, and I regret...

    GP Hunter Loading Problem

Thanks to all who provided info on this topic, but I'm still having problems. I'm encouraged by Misfit's success, as it sounds like he was having the exact same problem with the same gun (50 cal GPH). Swabbing with alcohol just didn't work for me GaCop, not sure why, still extremely tight...

Lyman GPH shot great with re-sized bullet

Do you know if the barrel size is extremely consistent in the GP Hunter rifles? If so I may try your mold and re-sizing trick and see if I can get the same results. I posted recently about the trouble I've been having getting a second Hornady Great Plains bullet to seat after the first shot...

    GP Hunter Loading Problem

Thanks GAcop, I'll try that. Is the problem simply one of powder fouling, or is it possible that my bullets are leaving some lead residue, and if so should I be using a solvent in addition to the hot water when I do a thorough cleaning? It seems to me that I've read somewhere that muzzleloader...

    GP Hunter Loading Problem

I recently bought a Lyman Great Plains Hunter (conical shooter) in 50 cal. I've been shooting the Great Plains bullet in it, and have found that after the first shot it is very hard to get a second bullet down the barrel. Is this normal? Do you have to clean between every shot? I have been...
