Well I cut the barrel down to a more manageable 28 inches. Then I had my first go at dovetailing for the front sight. Surprised myself at how easy I made it look!
Inside of barrel seems to be fine. Thinking of making a tang out of the barrel offcut. Any safety reasons not to?
This is better news. I have to give them a proper inspection. I actually have a spare Lyman lock. Going to make some hybrid trade rifle/deerstalker/ great plains rifle . Shorten it up so it will travel better.
Thanks guys
I'll keep you posted
Thanks for the replies. Nobody has actually answered the question yet though regarding stock dimensions. I picked up some decent stock wood yesterday to carve out a replacement .
I will take all precautions regarding the metal, especially the barrel.
I had the unfortunate experience recently of watchng my boat go up in smoke on the highway. Unfortunately my Lyman great plains rifle was inside it at the time not to mention other very expensive items.
I salvaged the barrel from the aftermath along with parts. Obviously the stock was destroyed...
I use a sling swivel designed for a. 45/70,magazine tube and clamp that to my ramrod thimble.
It is easily taken off with no permanent alterations to the rifle. Alternatively you can solder a stud to the bottom of a ramrod thimble and attach a sling via a q.d. Sling swivel.
I do plenty of...
Did you get a red deer? We have heaps of them as well as several other species of deer. Buffalo and pigs are another favourite. I'd love to do a whitetail or elk hunt.
Try and see things from the squirrels point of view! You giant two legged freaks cut down our forests to build your homes but when we return the favour you eat us! :cursing:
No squirrels. I was pretty much spellbound by them when I was in Canada! I honestly don't think I could shoot one. Too cute.
Hundreds of millions of rabbits though. You could shoot fifty a day in some places.
I can see your groups opening up. The trouble might be with the calibre. A 45 needs to be accurate to avoid marginal hits whereas say a 62, less so as it would still be quite lethal.
Only one way to find out but on game, I can see it causing issues.
Thank God for you batman! I did actually send them a message and got no response. What do you think forums are for? Clue: information sharing.
It was more than just a rumour. It was a written statement from a Lyman dealer. Maybe you could contact that same "nice fellow" and ask him directly -...
I don't think this guy would deliberately do so but yes, it has happened before. As I said, if it was true I'm sure you guys would be all over it like a seagull on a chip.
I'll do some digging around to find out. Be an odd thing for a supplier to say if it's untrue though. Some incredible sale prices on the deerstalker rifles at your end at the moment. Makes me more than a little bit envious!
