Now THIS was one heck of a ‘flash in the pan’!

My copy of the alleged ‘Mayflower’ (think Pilgrims, etc.) wheellock carbine, as built by Brian Anderson, has never failed to fire or has never had a flash in the pan. Tonight at the range, other guys shooting were absolutely fascinated by the 460-year old technology. And of course, as fate...

    Vintage tool for working leather?

The tips or points appear to make this be a ‘French style’ leather pricking punch … but I’ve never seen one so wide. There are 2 rows of staggered ‘teeth’ and the tool is marked as ‘11’, and there are 11 teeth per inch. The tool head is ~5-1/8” wide. So a leather spacing tool is my best guess...

    That’ll stick!!!!!

The 1st station at yesterdays Woodswalk was a hanging log ~ 8” wide … and it would swing and turn wildly if you had a glancing blow or a stick out on the edge. I not only scored on the 2 hits with both knife and hatchet, but look how square to the block the sticks were! I doubt I will ever...

Proofing charges of original Matchlock barrels

Proofing info from the book, Indian & Oriental Armour, by Lord Egerton, 1896, when discussing the quality of the Indian arms, as beginning on Page 60 of the document (Pg 74 of the PDF). Many thanks to RickyStl for the link! FYI, the PDF is available FREE online @...

Now THIS wheellock would hurt a LH'd shooter!

Wheellock Arquebus, Italy, circa 1625 to 1630 - Museum of Paris Now admittedly I like the below mentioned body parts of a certain persuasion in my face as much as the next guy ... but this is NOT for those shooting left-handed! :ghostly: "This arquebus appears to come from Southern Italy and...

Suggestions for 'old time' dark/black stain or dye?

FYI, my friend @tarawa1943 on here just picked up this fishtail-stocked matchlock with a nice dark stain on it. Such early arms were often 'blackened', for lack of better words. Anyone have any suggestions for such a dark or black dye/stain from real world experience? Thanks in advance!

New Goex powder vs. the Old Goex powder

A friend sent me this and has asked if anyone else has run into this? Note, yes he loads by volume, but tunes his fire locks to a specific chaerge 'by weight, when he does his load development for the utmost in accuracy. Don't flame me ... am just curious what other have experienced. I advised...

One of the 1st Hand Gonnes - Tannenberg Castle replica, circa late 1300s

Just completed the staining of the tiller for this one, but I need to find a blacksmith to make me a proper SPIKE tip. This is a 62-caliber brass barrel model, that TRS used to sell for $200 (they unfortunately don't list it anymore), that is very similar to the gonne found in the ruins of...

    German 54-Caliber Buchsflinte (A Dbl-Barreled Cape Gun)

A Double-Barrel (Smoothbore & Rifled) Side-by-Side Percussion Sporting Arm FYI, I bought this for a song from a local/modern 'toy' shop that has ZERO idea about anything of the real powdah that be black. I had a collector friend in Germany take a look at all of the extensive photos I had sent...

Be AWARE, be VERY cautious if looking at something from a French auction house!

Recommend you really do some soul searching and wallet assessment before buying an antique fire lock from any French auction house! I am glad I had asked 1st, because I really wanted to bid on an 'Eprouvette', which is a black powdah tester that looks like a pistol, but has in fact a little...
