Personally, I would rather watch an amateur that knows and has some passion for history, do a youtube video about what they know and have researched - then to watch the History Channel or some Hollywood production that doesn't have a clue.
I've shot both cap and flint for 40+ years and about the only pro and con I can come up with is that on a humid day with a flinter you have to pay extra attention to the moister gathering in the pan and breech, you need to get these areas wiped out with a pipe cleaner (vent) and a q-tip (pan)...
Always enjoy when Pletch does testing on something, it's always interesting.
I always pick and prime with 4f and fill my pan to about 2/3rds full.
Last week I shot in hot dry conditions - no hang fires using a 2fg Goex 65 grain main charge under a spit patched .495 ball.
This morning I shot...
If the barrel to stock fit is correct, a person should never have to remove the barrel from the stock unless some type of repair is needed to the stock or barrel. Same goes for wedged barrel to stock fits. Where many people for years have made the mistake is always assuming they need to remove a...
Couple weeks ago a friend of mine picked up a T/C .45 caliber flintlock (25 years old at least, maybe older) for $150.00... This was his first flintlock so I went to the Range with him and walked him through the steps after he cleaned his new rifle.
Got to say it was fast and accurate, and he...
.50 or .54, it does not matter. What does matter is shot placement. I prefer the patched round ball backed by a good charge that is zeroed and will do the job on the game I'm hunting.
Conical bullets I have no use for as they can travel forward off the main charge (even a tad) when covering...
I have always left at least one of my '58 Remington Army Revolvers loaded and capped for up to and over two years at a time.
When I think about it I'll take my Revolver to the Range and discharge the five shots loaded in the cylinder (I only load five and use a paper/ball cartridge) into a...
I've tried both 2f and 3f as priming powder in different flintlocks of mine with 2f and 3f loads and find they both work just fine.
However, since I have two plus pounds of 4f for priming I doubt I'll be changing to just one horn anytime soon.
I'll also add that the idea of just one horn is...
I think many people have many firearms but I also believe that just as many have them for different purposes and reasons, be it hunting, sports shooting, collecting, investment value. For whatever reason, I say good for them.
Since I can remember getting into this sport/hobby (40 plus years ago), I've carried my bag and horn on my right side (I'm right handed). I don't tie my horns to my bags.
Just throwing out a tip here.
When joining the two piece stock, you can use old aluminum antennae tubing in the ramrod channel (epoxy it in) as well as the two pins, and it will make a sound stock. A 3/8" ramrod will slide right through the old aluminum antennae tubing (check the piece you use...
You might also look into the cross sticks buffalo hunters used. It's my understanding they had/used cross sticks with a type of leather cradle to hold their rifle in. Your research may lead you to earlier style/types of cross sticks.
Agreed, washing the sizing out of the patching material... Also will add to give spit patching a try. Only time I use any type of patch lube is when I'm hunting.
