    18th Century Pencil

About a year ago I started researching 18th century pencils.I had been asked by some school classes during a living history event and I did not have an answer. Graphite was first discovered in England in 1565 and was called "greasy lead" because it resembled lead. In the late 18th century it was...

    Scissors Mod

Like a lot of folks, I have the Chinese scissors for my kit. Never did like the look of the handles. I found a simple way to change the shape. I used some scrap pieces of wood dowel as a form to cold bend the handle. First offset the handle tips so they will clear the straight part. Offset the...

    Student's Knives 2011

My student, Gage, finished 3 knives this summer and rough forged 2 more. He only had two days each week in the forge, due to football practice schedule. He has really improved his hammering skills. Not too shabby for a 13 year old. Thanks for looking, Mike

    First Forged Pliers

I finally forged some pliers for my 18th century kit. Not that pretty, but they work. The 7" are made from 3/8" round stock and the 5 1/2" from 5/16" round. Thanks for looking, Mike

    Paying my Dues

My wife has been wanting a hat pin and some sewing pins for her 18th century kit." You are a blacksmith, make me some". I used some wrapping wire from an old whisk broom. It is about .038" worked pretty good. I dipped the ends in molten brass to make the heads. Hot blued and coated with bee's...

Going to make some moccasins for my wife and me. I have the Michael Galban DVD, a couple of books and sewing supplies. What is the best material to use for making a trial pair of mocs to refine my technique and patterns. Will have to work in the ortho insoles and don't want to waste the hide in...

    8oz. canvas tarp?

Picked up a 12'x15', 8oz. canvas drop cloth at a thrift store for $10 today. It is the same one that Lowes sells. Is it too light to use for a diamond fly shelter? I plan on using Nikwax to seal it. Also, need some "how to" info on ties and any reinforcing needed. Any input is appreciated. Mike

    Field Stand for Rifles

Needed a stand to hold my rifles while paper shooting. Used some scrap 1/2" square and round stock I had in the forge. Also made an open eyelet to hold my range rod. All I need to add is a piece of scrap carpet with a couple of half inch holes and it will be ready for use. Thanks for looking, Mike

    Dickert is Done!

The 54cal Dickert, in the white, I got from Tip Curtis is finally done. The humidity has been terrible since I received the gun. Slowed the finishing a great deal. I added a custom alcohol based stain that I use on my curly maple knife handles, followed by 3 hand rubbed thinned coats of clear...

New .54cal Dickert in the white

Just received a .54cal Dickert in the white from Tip Curtis Frontier Shop.I feel like a kid at Christmas. It has a 42" swamped C weight barrel with Tip's standard maple stock. It's just what I wanted and a lot of gun for the money. Tip put the first coat of stain on before it shipped. It was a...

    IT WORKED!

Been working on my .54cal GPR for the last two days. Coned the barrel yesterday, using a Joe Wood tool. Messed up a few pieces of sand paper at first, then everything just started working. You just let the tool do the work. My T/C cock and a dozen Rich Pierce flints arrived yesterday. I spent...

Not the one I really wanted(Chambers Early Lancaster), but a Lyman GPR 54cal Flint.A realistic evaluation of my finances told me it would probably be next year before I could possibly save enough. Delivery will be 4-6 weeks, but for a price of $332 delivered, I can wait. I figure it will be good...
