    Garage Sale Find!!!

Well, I tried a .45 cal ball that fits my CVA Kentucky and also my Pedersoli, but it sits on top of the barrel like an ice cream scoop on a cone! Rats! However a 3/8" drill bit is a loose fit and when I patch it with mink oil it is a good snug fit. So does a .40 RB sound like a good fit? And...

    Garage Sale Find!!!

At a garage sale today I found and purchased a percussion pistol, marked NORBERTO ARIZMENDI EIBAR MADE IN SPAIN. Barrel about 9-3/8 inches. Also marked 12 m/m. Appears unfired; the nipple has very slight peening from dry firing. Lots of rust in the barrel but seems to be a smoothbore, and the...

    Walnut SMR finish

I am in the process of finishing an unmentionable with a walnut stock. My plan is to use walnut stain before finishing. My question is what comes first? Stain, then filler and sealer, then either BLO or Tru Oil? Or does the stain go on after the sealer and filer? In the past I have not used...

    Full cock in stand

Since I nearly tore my finger off once coming down from a tree stand I now park a folding chair up to a tree and sit thre waiting for the deer to come to me. I have much better luck seeing deer than I used to when I would blunder (oops still hunt) through the woods looking for them! Tom

    Tightening the Jaw Screw?

"Torque specs: Tighten until something breaks.. then back off 1/4 turn." That's how they find the correct weight limits for bridges - keep driving heavier loads over the bridge until it breaks, then back off one ton.

    Grizz with a 50 RB

Back in the '60s Sports Afield ran an article about a teenage native Alaska girl who killed a huge brown bear with one shot from a .22 short. Bear was following her and another woman. They hid and she shot it in the ear. From the picture the gun was an Armalite or copy. Tom

    2022 Moose Lottery

In 1999 I "won" the Minnesota moose lottery after putting in for seven years. Scouted the area for six weeks. Three of us in the party. My friend shot the bull ten minutes into the season. Later said "The horns looked a lot bigger in the scope". Took us all day to butcher it and haul it out in...

    FFL?

The last flintlock long rifle I purchased off Gunb...... required shipping to an FFL. Cabelas agreed to accept it. But the numskull who took it in from the loading dock marked the caliber on the intake document as ".45 Colt"!!!! When I went to pick it up it took two hours and visits from two...

Breech plug removal on old flintlock

According to legend anyway, to remove a stuck ball the old-timer 'smiths would remove the barrel from the stock, put it in a machinists' vise and heat the breech end with a blowtorch. Not that I'm suggesting anything!!!!!!!!!! Tom

How cold is too cold for you to shoot?

One time I bought an un-mentionable sporterized Mauser rifle. Took it out to the range on a winter day about 20 degrees. Gun would not shoot! Took it home and disassembled the bolt - someone had "lubricated" it with a hefty dose of Vaseline! Tom

    Hello from Germany

Welcome! Where do you live in Germany? My grandfather came from Coesfeld, Nord-Rhein Westphal. Have not been there, but have visited in Dusseldorf, the Black Forest and Oberstaufen. Tom

    Wood Butt Plate

Shotgun in a soft padded case, taking it out of the back of a pickup. Dropped about a foot. Cracked the toe off even though it was "protected by a hard rubber butt plate. (didn't damage the butt plate, just the stock. Had to fit a new piece of walnut on the stock.

    Moose hunting with the .54

Our 1990 Minnesota bull moose - shot with an unmentionable - we sent the hide out to be tanned. When I picked it up and opened the package it looked as if someone had shot it with a shotgun! The tanner's skiving machine had popped off all the tick bite "nodes". Made it unusable for anything but...
