    Last winters project

I didn’t describe the assembly right. The barrel and breech plug are secured with the nipple. The breech plug and receiver are secured with a round head screw. The barrel was c-bored and threaded up to a square shoulder. The breech plug screwed in and checked for a tight fit then both were...

I forgot to mention that I've still got to taper lap the barrel yet. Probably this summer.

    Last winters project

Several years ago I came across a photo of RJ Renners Faeton under hammer. It is beautiful, slim and graceful. So I tried to duplicate it. I had access to a milling machine and also I’m a retired machinist. I found a 50 cal section of barrel on eBay plus trigger and hammer. Barrel has no...

    Hopkins & Allen question

Just out of curiosity has anyone ever heated and bent the H&A hammer? I building a scratch built rifle with the only premade parts being barrel, trigger and hammer. I'm not happy with the way my hammer lines up with the nipple and would like to bend it to fit. I do know that the hammer is quite...

    Underhammer Actions?

I called it the wrong type of breech plug. What I should have said was a "Faeton" breech plug like RJ Renner makes. I made mine from a Grade 8 bolt. Turned and threaded to 5/8-18 thread. I picked up a H&A trigger and hammer, plus a length of barrel off Ebay. The rest of the rifle I'm making...

    Underhammer Actions?

Just curious about why you want the nipple in front of the breech plug. How about a Patent breech plug? The reason I'm asking is because I'm nearly complete with a scratch built rifle and I used a Patent brech plug.

    Hopkins & Allen question

Here is the small jig I used to measure the 2 notch surfaces. When I started the half cock was about .028 further out then the full cock. So after filing and polishing .030 off it now clears by about .002. The half cock has to be closer to the pivot point or it will hit. Point A has to be out...

    Hopkins & Allen question

I set my hammer up in a small jig and using a dial indicator measured that the face of the half cock sticks out .025 more then the full cock notch as it pivots around. So no matter how much spacing between hammer and trigger I would still have a problem. Time to trim half cock notch I guess...

    Hopkins & Allen question

Thanks. I've been using a little jig with various spacing to try. Will try 1.05 tomorrow.

    Hopkins & Allen question

Hi Hawkeye, I was wondering if you can tell me the center to center distance between the hammer and trigger pivot points. I'm building a underhammer from scratch and am having trouble determining how to drill and ream the frame for them. Thanks, Jim

    Heavy barrel

I wanted 40 to 48" to start with so I could use the extra length to make the false muzzle and bullet starter. The finished barrel would be 32 to 36" long. Rice barrels said they can make me what I want. Still doing my homework. Thanks.

Does anyone have a copy of Lester Cox's instructions on making a slug gun?

    Heavy barrel

Thanks to all who have replied to my question about false muzzles. You have all made very valid points about how this should be done. I went back into the forum posts to 2006 and found the idea of using a spacer the same width as the part off tool which would put the rifling back in the same...

    Heavy barrel

Yes, it will be off. Depending on the rate of twist will tell you how much. Example: a .5" dia bore has a circumference of 1.570". A 1 in 18 twist means that for every inch you go along the bore the rifling twists .087, (1.570/18). If you have a 1/8" wide part off tool you will lose 1/8 of .087...

    Heavy barrel

After thinking some more on this I have my doubts if the lead slug would be stiff enough to hold the alignment while parting the false muzzle off. Have to do some more thinking I guess.

    Heavy barrel

I've read where you can do it to a barrel that is already rifled. You have to pour a lead slug in the location where you want to cut the barrel then cut it on a lathe to the depth where it just starts cutting lead all the way around. Twist off the piece that will be your false muzzle and set...

    Heavy barrel

I just made a startling discovery about my lathe. The through hole in the spindle is only 1.4" dia so the measurement across the flats can only be 1.29". So I guess I'll look for a barrel that is 1.25 wide. The reason I was asking about 40" lengths was so that I could use the excess to turn the...

    Heavy barrel

Yes,it would be a slug gun shooting swaged bullets with paper patch. I've been reading Ned Roberts book on cap lock rifles now for a couple years and would really like to make a target rifle with all the accessories. I'm a retired machinist and have the skills to do it but I need a barrel. I...
